Donald Trump scores massive fundraising victory

In a striking reversal of political fortunes, former President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign posted a jaw-dropping $141 million fundraising haul in May – over $60 million more than President Joe Biden’s campaign.

Trump’s fundraising has been buoyed by an energized Republican base in the wake of the former president’s controversial felony convictions in New York.

Federal filings made public on Thursday lay bare just how angry Republican voters were, and showed tens of millions of dollars in donations flooding in immediately after Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts related to hush money payments during his 2016 campaign.

Instead of defeating the Republican candidate, Trump’s felony verdict sparked an explosive surge in support from his unwavering base.

Biden’s team raised a decent $85 million in May through his campaign and the Democratic National Committee. However, that total paled in comparison to Trump’s, despite the incumbent raising around $40 million more in star-studded celebrity events staring backers like former President Barack Obama.

The Trump campaign and Republican National Committee ended May with over $170 million cash on hand, neutralizing what was once a massive Biden cash advantage heading into the final sprint of the 2024 election season.

The Biden campaign downplayed the Trump fundraising bonanza.

“Our strong and consistent fundraising program grew by millions of people in May, a clear sign of strong and growing enthusiasm for the president,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez stated, adding it was “a stark contrast to Trump’s PR stunts and photo-ops that he’s pretending is a campaign.”

But the Trump fundraising juggernaut showed no signs of slowing last month.

Billionaire donor Timothy Mellon poured a stunning $50 million into a pro-Trump super PAC the day after his convictions, filings revealed. That group, MAGA Inc., had banked nearly $94 million by month’s end and immediately reserved $3.5 million in swing state TV ads beginning in July.

While the Biden team tried to play down the threat by questioning if Trump funds are diverting to legal fees, the reality is his supporters have become further galvanized in the face of prosecutors’ attempts to derail his candidacy.

Trump’s fundraising prowess could foretell even more shocking developments to come in the most untraditional election in modern history. His felony convictions have rewritten the rules so thoroughly that the once-unthinkable prospect of a convicted felon capturing the presidency no longer seems so far-fetched – especially if Trump’s fundraising lead allows him to overwhelm Biden’s campaign over the critical final months.
