The Republican Party is going to Dallas and is going to make history.
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday night on Truth Social that the GOP will hold the first national midterm convention in American history, a two-day celebration of the America First agenda set for September 9-10 in Dallas, Texas.
“BIG NEWS! For the first time ever, the Republican Party will hold a MIDTERM CONVENTION,” Trump posted. “It will be in Dallas, Texas — One of my favorite places in the World. It will be fantastic! It has never been done before, and will be a truly Historic Event.”
Trump said the event is both a victory lap and a launching pad for the next election.
“We are going to celebrate the GREAT AMERICAN COMEBACK, and the incredible successes of the American People who transformed our Country through the America First Agenda — NO TAX ON TIPS, NO TAX ON OVERTIME, NO TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY, STRONGER BORDERS, SAFEST EVER COMMUNITIES, LOWER COSTS AND REAL AFFORDABILITY, MORE JOBS, AMERICAN ENERGY DOMINANCE, AND SO MUCH MORE!” he wrote. “Oil Prices are dropping sharply, even as we Denuclearize Iran. We are delivering on the promises that politicians talked about for decades, but never got done.”
“At the Event, we will have hardworking Americans, our Great Innovators, Entrepreneurs, Manufacturers, First Responders, and Job Creators who are powering our Nation’s Golden Age,” Trump wrote, adding there would be “lots of Great Entertainment — It will be a RALLY like none other!”
RNC Chair Joe Gruters was quick to confirm.
“This historic Midterm Convention will highlight President Trump’s many accomplishments and unwavering commitment to restoring America,” Gruters said. “This convention will be a Trumpapalooza, where we will showcase the America First agenda, which has delivered the largest tax cut in history and made communities safer.”
The convention has been in the making for a year. Trump first floated the idea on Truth Social in August 2025, writing that he was “thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!!” The RNC then changed its party rules in January to formally allow Gruters to convene a convention during a midterm election year.
The timing is intentional. Republicans are defending a razor-thin House majority and a narrow Senate edge heading into November, with competitive races in Ohio, Michigan, Maine, North Carolina, Georgia, and Texas. Historically, the president’s party loses seats in midterm elections. With Trump’s name not on any ballot, the convention is designed to keep him at the center of the campaign.
Democrats dismissed the announcement before the ink was dry. DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer called the event “a multi-million dollar televised celebration for Trump that will only remind Americans of his failed promise to them and tie already flailing Republican swing-seat candidates to a historically unpopular president.”
Trump closed his announcement with his classic bombastic style: “THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICA HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN.”
