President Donald Trump dismissed reports of declining approval ratings as “fake polls” from the “Radical Left Media” in a Truth Social post.
Instead, Trump says he has the best numbers of his presidency despite multiple surveys showing slipping support.
“So many Fake Polls are being shown by the Radical Left Media, all slanted heavily toward Democrats and Far Left Wingers,” Trump wrote on Truth Social in November. “In the Fair Polls, and even the Reasonable Polls, I have the Best Numbers I have ever had and, why shouldn’t I? I ended eight Wars, created the Greatest Economy in the History of our Country, kept Prices, Inflation, and Taxes down, and am setting standards for Right Track / Wrong Track for a future U.S.A. Fake News will never change, they are evil and corrupt but, as I look around my beautiful surroundings, I say to myself, ‘Oh, look, I’m sitting in the Oval Office!'”
The White House has pointed to the statement when asked about Trump’s poll numbers, and said mainstream polls do not accurately reflect his support – election results do.
However, conservative-leaning Rasmussen Reports shows Trump’s approval has slipped slightly from highs earlier in his second term. On December 16, Rasmussen showed Trump at 47% approval and 51% disapproval, down from approval ratings in the low 50s he enjoyed in the spring and summer.
Trump’s Approval Index on Rasmussen, which measures the difference between those who “strongly approve” and “strongly disapprove,” stood at -11 on December 16. The index reached as high as +6 in late January shortly after his inauguration.
Mainstream media polls claim there has been a much bigger decline. Gallup reported Trump’s approval at just 36% in late November, which would be a second-term low. The AP-NORC poll also showed 36% approval in early December. An NBC News poll released Sunday showed 42% approval, down from 45% in April.
The media claims that among Trump’s core MAGA base, support has noticeably softened. An NBC News Decision Desk poll claimed that 70% of MAGA Republicans “strongly approve” of Trump, down 8 points from 78% in April.
The poll also showed fewer Republicans identifying themselves as part of the MAGA movement. In April, NBC News said a majority of Republicans identified with MAGA, but they are now evenly split between traditional Republican Party supporters and MAGA movement members.
White House spokesman Kush Desai said that “Every member of the Trump administration continues to focus on recreating the historic job, wage and economic growth that Americans enjoyed during President Trump’s first term.”
“President Trump inherited the worst inflation crisis in a generation from Joe Biden’s incompetence, and his Administration has rapidly cooled inflation to a 2.5 percent annualized rate.”
