President Donald J. Trump just completed his first 100 days in office in his second term, but already, speculation is running wild about the next presidential race.
Tongues are wagging around the Beltway about who the next Republican and Democratic candidates will be in the 2028 presidential election.
The talking heads in both parties can’t wait to think about a future without the 47th president—especially if the Republicans revert to a Bush-era candidate who will undo the America First movement.
But President Trump doesn’t just talk; he also has his finger on the pulse of American politics—and he just named the people he would like to run for the chance to take Trump’s seat in the Oval Office.
The president tipped his hand during an interview with one of the most hostile people in the entire legacy media.
Kristen Welker, who hosts Meet the Press, made a big impact on the last election when she interrupted President Trump and kept him from discussing Hunter Biden’s corrupt dealings with the Ukrainian oil company, Burisma—which resulted in millions of dollars flowing into the Biden family’s coffers.
“They’re calling you a corrupt politician. They call (Hunter’s laptop) ‘The Laptop from Hell,’” said Trump, who had just recovered from COVID-19, trying to raise an issue Welker never asked about.
“We’re talking about the issue of race! I do want to stay on the issue of race,” Welker said, cutting him off and steering the debate away from the information voters needed to avoid making a huge mistake that November.
She helped—you might say “fortified”—the Democrats as they stopped Trump from serving his second term four years ago.
But he was ready when she came after him this week…and he held nothing back.

Welker hoped to trap President Trump into saying something that she could twist into an insinuation that he does not plan to leave office at the end of his term, possibly even set himself up as a dictator for life. Did she plan to run for a third term as president, she asked.
“So many people want me to do it,” President Trump replied before shutting her down cold. But “it’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do.”
“There are many people selling the (Trump for president in) 2028 hat. But this is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody.”
Then he opened up about who might run in his place in 2028.
🚨President Trump shuts down the idea of a 2028 presidential run:

“You have built a political movement that has transformed the Republican Party. It’ss transformed the country, quite frankly,” said Welker, trying to set Trump up.
“The greatest political movement in history, MAGA—Make America Great Again,” said Trump, repeating the phrase he loves so much.
“When you look to the future, Mr. President, do you think the MAGA movement can survive without you?” asked Welker.
But he refused to take the bait.
“Yes, I do,” President Trump answered quickly. The MAGA movement is “so strong,” he said, “and I we have such tremendous people. I think we have a tremendous group of people. We talked about a number of them.”
Then he named the candidates he thought could take over leadership of the GOP after he leaves office.
“You look at Marco” Rubio, the current secretary of state. “You look at J.D. Vance,” the vice president, “who’s fantastic.”
The ranks of MAGA, America-First Republicans are so strong that “I could name 10, 15, 20 people right now, just sitting here,” who could take the reins and lead the MAGA movement into the next presidential election in 2028, said Trump.
“I have we have a tremendous party,” the president added, beaming with obvious pride.
The media made a big deal out of President Trump telling Fox News anchor Bret Baier that he does not necessarily see J.D. Vance as his successor. But that’s not discouragement: He said “it’s too early” to endorse anyone.
The 47th president had some fiery exchanges with then-Sen. Rubio in the 2016 primaries. Marco made a rude insinuation about the size of candidate Trump’s genitalia; Trump responded by nicknaming Rubio, who was then a Florida senator, “Little Marco.”
But now, all seems to be forgiven, as he’s given Rubio a larger and larger portfolio in the Trump-Vance administration.
Not only did Trump endorse the Republican in 2028, he gave an endorsement, of sorts, to the Democrats.
WELKER: “Do you think the MAGA movement can survive without you?”
TRUMP: "Yes, I do. I could name 10, 15, 20 people right now… I look at the Democrats, they're in total disarray."

The president then led Welker into a trap of his own.
“You know what I can’t name?” he asked. “I can’t name one Democrat” who can take a credible stab at running for president in four years, he said. “I mean, I look at the Democrats,” he said. “They’re in total disarray!”
But Trump went so far as to say who he would like to run on the Democratic ticket in 2028 during his White House press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday afternoon: California Gov. Gavin Newsom—whose name Trump repeatedly pronounced “Gavin New-scum.”
“I’d love him to run for president on the other side. I’d love to see that, but I don’t think he’s gonna be running,” because of his failure as governor of California. Crime, homelessness, his ability to build a high-speed rail line in his state, “and a lot of other things pretty much put him out of the race,” said Trump.
President Trump absolutely DESTROYS Governor Gavin Newscum as Canadian PM Mark Carney sits uncomfortably squirming beside him! EPIC TRUMP! 😆😆👏🏻🇺🇸

Other prominent Democrats said to be interested in running for president in 2028 include Kamala Harris, Tim Walz, Pete Buttigieg, and Senator Cory Booker, among others.
Who do you think will lead the two parties in 2028?
