Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other senior Democratic Party leadership are facing a worsening crisis by the day.
Internal divisions have erupted into open conflict among Democrats, and their approval ratings have plummeted among voters — the most serious challenge to Schumer in years.
CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten delivered a stark assessment Thursday, describing the situation as “a revolt” within Democratic ranks as confidence in the party’s congressional leadership has collapsed in the months since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.
“Democrats on Dem leaders in Congress — the belief that they will do the right thing when it comes to the economy — last year at this time, 80% believed that the Democratic leaders in Congress would do the right thing,” Enten said during an appearance on CNN News Central.
“Look at where we are now. That number has been slashed in half — to just 39%. Holy Toledo.”
“That is the lowest number by far in Gallup polling. The lowest previous was just 60%, which is 21 points higher than this,” Enten said.
The polling collapse coincides with chaos among the party’s organizational structure.
DNC Chairman Ken Martin delivered an ultimatum Thursday to newly-elected Vice Chairman David Hogg regarding Hogg’s plan to fund far-Left primary challenges against sitting Democratic representatives.
“If you want to challenge incumbents, you’re more than free to do that, but just not as an officer of the DNC, because our job is to be neutral arbiters,” Martin told Hogg, according to Fox News. “We can’t be both the referee and also the player at the same time. You have to make a decision.”
Hogg, elected to his DNC role in February, has pledged to direct $20 million through his organization Leaders We Deserve to primary challenges against what he terms “ineffective” House Democrats in safe blue districts. His response to Martin’s ultimatum was defiant.
“They’re trying to change the rules because I’m not currently breaking them,” Hogg said in a statement. “As we’re seeing law firms, tech companies, and so many others bowing to Trump, we all must use whatever position of power we have to fight back. And that’s exactly what I’m doing.”
Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville suggested the DNC could sue Hogg — it’s own leader — for working against the party’s interests. Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has publicly committed to supporting every incumbent Democrat, placing him in direct opposition to Hogg’s strategy.
Further complicating matters, Jeffries recently found himself at odds with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer over a bipartisan spending bill to avert a government shutdown, causing even more chaos.
Schumer’s own standing appears increasingly precarious, with polling showing the longtime party leader struggling to maintain the approval of even half of Democrats in his home state of New York.
The leadership vacuum has potentially contributed to Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin’s, D-I.L., decision not to seek reelection, announced Wednesday.
“Democrats hate, hate, hate, hate what their congressional leaders in Washington are doing right now on the key issue of the day, the economy. And their confidence has fallen through the floor,” Enten concluded.
Talk about very, very bad news for Schumer.
