Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the U.S. Secret Service, announced Tuesday morning that she is resigning following the near assassination of former President Donald Trump.
A gunman shot Trump in the ear at a Pennsylvania rally in a gun barrage that killed one bystander and wounded two others, and attack that unleashed bipartisan outcry about how the Secret Service could fail its core mission so badly.
Cheatle had served as the director of the Secret Service since August 2022.
“I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” Cheatle said in an email to staff, announcing her retirement. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director.”
