In the aftermath of the reported assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, a troubling trend has emerged within liberal circles: the rapid spread of conspiracy theories dubbed “BlueAnon.”
The conspiracies, mirroring the right-wing QAnon movement, has seen prominent Democrats and left-leaning figures promoting unfounded speculation about the deadly attack that claimed the life of a bystander and nearly killed the 45th president.
Dmitri Mehlhorn, a top Democratic strategist associated with LinkedIn co-founder and Democratic mega-donor Reid Hoffman, spread the idea that the assassination attempt might have been a false-flag operation orchestrated by Trump himself for political gain.
“This is a classic Russian tactic, such as when Putin killed 300 civilians in 1999 and blamed it on terrorists to ride the backlash to winning power.” He went on to suggest that if any Trump officials encouraged or knew about the attack, it would be “morally horrific” and grounds for Trump to step down,” Mehlhorn claimed.
Law enforcement identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, with no ties to the Trump campaign. Mehlhorn’s comments have raised eyebrows, particularly given his association with Hoffman, who recently made controversial remarks about making Trump “an actual martyr.”
He wasn’t alone. The spread of these conspiracy theories was widespread on social media platforms. Liberal users have scrutinized everything from the camera angles of photos taken during the incident to Trump’s physical reactions, claiming the attack was staged for political benefit.
This trend of liberal conspiracy thought, dubbed “BlueAnon” by some commentators, represents a concerning development in American political discourse.

Experts warn that the proliferation of such conspiracy theories aren’t just harmless — they could have serious implications for the democratic process. They emphasize the need for critical thinking and fact-checking, especially in the face of shocking or politically charged events.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this unprecedented assassination attempt on Trump, the rise of “BlueAnon” serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing American democracy in the digital age.
