Ben Franklin’s grave cracked from penny tradition

A fundraising campaign has been launched to save the damaged gravestone of Benjamin Franklin at the Christ Church Burial Ground in Philadelphia.

The Christ Church Preservation Trust tells The Philadelphia Inquirer that the marble ledger tablet marking Franklin’s final resting place has recently developed a significant crack.

The ritual of tossing pennies onto Franklin’s grave has been blamed for causing the crack. Tens of thousands of coins are thrown onto the marker each year in tribute of Franklin’s famous adage, “a penny saved, is a penny earned.”

Franklin, who died in 1790, is one of seven signers of the Declaration of Independence buried at the two-acre graveyard across from Independence Mall.

The trust has received grants to restore the gravestone but is seeking another $10,000 for the project.

The Associated Press contributed to this article.

Maybe they should use the pennies that are tossed onto his grave. Based on the photo a person can’t retrieve their coins once tossed.

So,, tell me what have they done with tens of thousands penney’s tossed on
the grave stone every year? Seems like the additional $10,000 they need
should not be a problem nor getting grants.
It doesn’t cost 20 or 30 thousand dollars to replace a headstone even if it is
Franklin’s unless this is another purchase by the government like what they
    pay for a hammer.

To hell with Ben Franklin, he has been dead way to long for any one to really care about him, besides we shouldn’t worry about him anyway, because he was nothing, but a filthy old womanizer with toe jam, not to mention he was just another falling down tounge chewing babbling idiot drunkard and coke addict! And after all, this guy Franklin, ZACKLEY what did he do anyway, I don’t call getting women drunk and doooing them, doing much of anything except for making new babies that you;ll have to pay child support for; and who in hell needs more babies? I traded mine in for a small box of KFC and a tube of KY Jelly?

Benjamin Franklin was a statesman and is included as one of the founders of the USA. He was an inventor, publisher, printer, philosopher and a lot of other good things. His picture is on the $100 bill, one of my favorite things to have in an emergency. He did have faults, as we all do. Do not disparage one of the finest minds ever to be a part of America.

Warning! Warning! TROLL alert or worse! Don’t be a hater of the History of America! We do not need your input about one of our founding Fathers of America! That really was an immature opinion. Are you a child or a college student?

What are you on? Next to the Constitution the Declaration of Independence is the most important document in the USA. Your info sounds like Commie or Islam propaganda!

Ben Franklin loved this nation so much he disowned his son for supporting the British control over the colonies instead of gaining independence. He was able to negotiate French assistance after the battle of Saratoga for the alliance. Yes, he was a womanizer, but his contributions out weigh his numerous faults, examples Treaty of Paries 1783, Declaration of Independence 1776, and the Constitution 1789, and the Treaty of Commerce with France 1779. Liberals want to destroy our pride as a nation and a people. Des pect for the flag millions fought and died carrying into battle is now acceptable even by our current President. Eight and the nation nearly drowned in a cesspool of lies and left wing ideology that cost trillions owned now by generation not even born yet. Liberal heroes are not without fault, yet a good lie goes a long way amongst the delusion ally impaired.
