Former President Barack Obama proudly displayed a crime while on live television, critics said, when he waved to news cameras while entering 10 Downing Street, the home of the British Prime Minister.
Critics accused Obama of violating the Logan Act.
The Logan Act, signed into law in 1799, criminalizes negotiations by unauthorized, private U.S. citizens with foreign governments.
As a former president, Obama is still just a private citizen and is prohibited from negotiating on the U.S. behalf with anyone — including the U.K. Prime Minister.
It’s an illustration of the hypocrisy of the Democratic Party, critics said, because Obama pressured President Joe Biden’s Justice Department to investigate former President Donald Trump’s advisor, Gen. Michael Flynn, over meetings with a Russian ambassador.
“Obama is violating the Logan Act in plain sight,” complained one social media critic.

Biden pressured the FBI to pursue @GenFlynn because Flynn spoke with the Russian ambassador, which was part of his duties as incoming National Security Advisor. Meanwhile, it's totally okay for private citizen Obama to have formal talks with the leadership of another country. https://t.co/2w7o7elgle pic.twitter.com/GIyTn2JSu1

Obama isn’t the only top-ranking Democratic official that has been accused of Logan Act violations.
Former Secretary of State John Kerry famously violated the act when he negotiated on behalf of the Obama administration with Iran… while Trump was president.
Kerry was trying to keep together the failed Iran nuclear deal.
Reports surfaced during the Trump presidency that an anonymous official from Obama’s administration had coached Iranian leaders on how to negotiate with the White House.
Those reports later identified the culprit as Kerry, who currently works as Biden’s “Climate Czar.”
The Horn News reported in 2019 —
For years, there have been calls to prosecute Kerry for his Iranian actions since leaving office.
Kerry admitted to violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act in December, just months after Daniel Greenfield of Frontpage Magazine accused Kerry of violating the Logan Act.
Greenfield noted a report in the Boston Globe from last year that said Kerry met with Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif for what the newspaper called “unusual shadow diplomacy.” Kerry even admitted he was trying to salvage the Iran nuclear deal and had met with Iranian officials a number of times.
Ultimately, Kerry got away with it then.
So why wouldn’t Obama try to get away with it in 2024?
