California firefighters rappelled down a steep ravine to rescue a days-old horse that was trapped for two days with a broken pelvis.
The San Jose Mercury News reports the horse is less than a week old and is recovering after its ordeal.
The colt, dubbed Valentine because it was rescued on the holiday, was stranded in a pool of water when animal control officers and firefighters fished him out Sunday.
Valentine will be taken to the University California at Davis for surgery. The operation will cost about $10,000 and the Tri-City Animal Shelter is taking donations to cover the cost.
Police are investigating how the colt got down the ravine.
The Tri-City Animal Shelter, located at 1950 Stevenson Blvd., is accepting donations during business hours. Call 510-790-6640 for more information.

Thank God for the right humanity in organizations and companies and professions who are the voice of our animals — our animals need the voice of respectful humanity, and get our human race educated that animals are to live in their parts of the world safely and for their entire lives without human terrorism or destruction of their natural habitats for stupid roads, tearing down forests for fields when there are plenty of fields to plant food — we are destroying the ecological balance of the natural resource world and our animals are dying with that destruction — can you believe an educated human race cannot respect or care for animals and give them their part of the world that they deserve and only protect and secure their natural habitats and environments — instead of building roads or fields through them when it is totally unnecessary.
Apparently the entire human race needs to be educated again and again and again on the role our animals have on this earth to live in harmony with the human race, but with our advancement, we are their voice for security and protection for food and shelter and protect them from any and all harm.
Thank you so very much.

No one seems to know how the colt got there; wondered if the owner was found. These stories never seem to answer the questons I would want to know. I think some weird people took the new-born down the revien, or slid it down the revien to be funny. I do not know if there fingerprints on the hoves or anything to find the culperts. You see, I believe in an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. I would not have thought about someone delibertly doing this except my husband told me a story of what some boys (did not say he was in on it) in Ireland did. A farmer had his mare isolated on an island because he did not want her to get pregnant where she could not work. Boys got together and carried a male acrose the mote to the mare and went back later and got him. The mair’s owner would comment on how she seems to be gaing weight and the boys would muffel a laugh because they knew she was pregnet. Not funny to the farmer; he had to count on this mare to help work the land….in those days
