Large portions of the makeshift refugee camp known as “the jungle” went up in flames Wednesday, as departing migrants set fire to shelters and tents before police moved in to relocate them out of northern France.
Hundreds of French police have swooped into the camp near the city of Calais, where thousands fleeing war and poverty have lived in squalor as they waited for a chance to sneak across the English Channel into Britain. Police are moving migrants to reception centers around France where they can seek asylum.
Migrants have flocked to the Calais region for decades, but the camp has grown as Europe’s migrant crisis expanded. As it evolved into a massive slum supported by aid groups, France finally decided to shut it down.
As the reality of the mass evacuation took hold, fearful migrants from Afghanistan, Sudan, Eritrea, Syria and Pakistan braced for a new reality. Some pledged to just keep moving.
“This jungle is no good,” said Muhammad Afridi, 20, from Pakistan. “We go to a new jungle.”
The main alley through the camp near the city of Calais burned overnight, leaving skeleton-like hulks on either side of the road. Firefighters delved into the camp’s deepest recesses, trying to prevent a massive conflagration.
Gas canisters popped as they exploded in the heat. One aid group’s truck burst into flames.
Migrants stood and watched. Some laughed.
Steve Barbet, a spokesman for the regional authorities, said one migrant was hospitalized. About 100 migrants were evacuated.
The camp once housed 6,300 migrants, according to authorities, but aid groups said the number was much higher.

I agree with you about immigrants from Syria, etc. Their country is at war and they are cowardly, fleeing from the battles instead of fighting to free their country. Wouldn’t we all be fighting for our country if it became necessary? Apparently these immigrants would not be joining us so why do we need them either here or in other places. The poor U.K. taxpayers don’t need more people on the take. I was there last year and the talk on the street is not encouraging for more immigrants there I can tell you.

ISIS barbarians used an industrial dough kneader to kill 250 children, and roasted adults in a bakery oven, according to a shocking new report.
In an interview with the humanitarian organization Roads of Success, Syrian mom Alice Assaf went into chilling detail about the atrocities the jihadists committed about two years ago in the town of Douma, explaining that some of the youngsters were even decapitated in front of their parents, according to the Express.
“After that, they caught some 250 kids and kneaded them like dough in the bakery dough machine,” Assaf said, according to media reports. “They were put in the dough mixer, they were kneaded. The oldest one of them was four-years-old.”
ISIS TRANSPORTED HUNDREDS OF GIRLS to the city of Douma, which has been at the center of the Syrian civil war, TO BE SLAUGHTERED (quite possibly in an actual slaughterhouse, since one of their favorite entertainments is slitting the throats of their victims and hanging them on meat hooks to bleed out – Jeanette). ISIS has been systematically killing non-Muslims, and the majority of its victims at the time were Christian.
Assaf said her own son, George, was killed by the radical militants after he refused to switch to a Muslim name.
Dr. Isaac reported the savage slayings to a member of the UK Parliament, Fiona Bruce, who recently recounted the horrifying testimony to her colleagues in open chambers.
“She showed us recent film footage of herself talking with mothers who had seen their own children crucified,” Bruce said.
