North Korea is notorious for restricting free speech, including their internet. But one HUGE mistake this week allowed outsiders to get a rare look inside the government run websites and secret propaganda networks.
The accidental leak allowed foreigners access to the .kp — the North Korean internet domains — and provided little known information about the workings of the North Korean internet.
A list of websites was reportedly first obtained by a US engineer when he sent North Korea’s Domain Name Server (DNS) an automated message asking for access. The server regularly rejects this request, but this time something went wrong and allowed the engineer full access, according to the BBC.
The lists most telling reveal? There are only 28 websites in all of North Korea, an embarrassingly small number when compared with the rest of the world, which boasts approximately one billion domains.
Most of the sites are over-the-top propaganda that follow the day-to-day happenings of the country’s egotistical dictator, Kim Jong Un. Whether he’s visiting a fruit farm or overseeing test-fire launches, it’s all covered, complete with photos.
There is also news coverage, however biased it may be, on the North Korean government’s take on worldly events.
Many articles cover the ‘horrible’ actions of South Korea, North Korea’s long time enemy, and threaten any of those who disagree with their so-called supreme leader. In one posting, those who “turned down the joint principles and declarations” are declared “confrontation fanatics.” 
One article commemorates the 150th anniversary of the defeat of a US ship, declaring, “Aggressors Will Be Bound to Meet Death.”
In addition to news and politics, there are strange entertainment aspects of the propaganda network. The site cooks.org.kp provides pictures of Korean dinner recipes and explains why the traditional food is the most delicious.
The site korfilm.com.kp provides reviews of different films, and is currently covering the Pyongyang International Film Festival.
Amusingly for outsiders, without the competition from the international world there appears to be no pressure to make the sites aesthetically pleasing or easy to use.
Martyn Williams, who runs the website North Korean Tech for San Francisco told BBC,” They don’t try to ape Western media. When you go on the website its obvious its news from North Korea. It’s not dressed up to look like a slick international media outlet.”
The leak was reported on Github, with one user posting, “On Sept 19, 2016 at approximately 10:00PM (PDT), one of North Korea’s top level nameservers was accidentally configured to allow global DNS zone transfers. This allows anyone who performs an AXFR (zone transfer) request to the country’s ns2.kptc.kp nameserver to get a copy of the nation’s top level DNS data.”
While the leak revealed previously unknown information about the North Korean internet, there remains a steel cloud of mystery surrounding North Korea’s intranet, which is a closed system solely for it’s citizens and would likely reveal much more information about the dictatorship’s internal workings.
