World Cup preview: How far can the United States go?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is here — and for the first time in a generation, the eyes of the soccer world are locked on American soil. The U.S. Men’s National Team kicks off their campaign tonight against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, and the pressure couldn’t be greater.

The golden generation’s moment to shine
Nearly a decade in the making, this roster is built around players who were heralded as the future of American soccer long before most of them could legally order a beer. Now entering their prime years — Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun, Sergino Dest, Weston McKennie and company — they face the ultimate test: performing when the whole country is finally paying attention.

Style of Play
Under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT have adopted an attack-first identity built around overwhelming opposing defenses. Outside backs Dest and Antonee Robinson are expected to push forward aggressively, triggering a relentless offensive wave. It’s an approach designed to get the best out of Pulisic, Balogun, and the team’s considerable attacking depth — and it’s been clicking in training camp.

That said, defense remains the elephant in the room. The team has recorded just one clean sheet in their last 14 matches, and some of the backline’s weaknesses could be ruthlessly exposed against elite competition. The health of center back Chris Richards — who arrived to camp with an ankle injury but is now ready to go — will be pivotal. Simply put, the team looks like a different squad with him anchoring the defense.

Stars to Watch
Pulisic is, of course, the face of the entire operation. Having put a 22-game scoring drought to bed at club level with AC Milan, he enters the World Cup confident and dangerous — and more importantly, unselfish. Expect him to create as much as he finishes.

Balogun may be the most intriguing wildcard. The in-form striker has reportedly been the trickiest player to defend in training and enters as the projected starter at center forward. Hot on his heels is Ricardo Pepi, who used his exclusion from the 2022 World Cup squad as fuel and is now pushing hard for a starting role — at minimum, he’s the first man off the bench when the U.S. desperately needs a goal.

Then there’s Gio Reyna — the X factor. The 23-year-old has battled injuries, inconsistent club minutes, and well-documented off-field drama since Qatar. But he’s been included on this roster for one reason: his playmaking ability is unlike anything else in the American player pool.

What Would Success Look Like?
The USMNT’s group features Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye — a manageable draw on paper. But the real question is what happens in the knockout rounds.

Falling in the round of 16 would be a disappointment. Reaching the quarterfinals — something the U.S. hasn’t done since 2002 — would be a watershed moment for the program. With their attacking depth, home crowd energy, and Pochettino’s clear tactical vision, the tools are all there. This is a team that could go on that kind of run.

But “could” and “will” are very different things. This group has had a habit of souring at the worst moments, and the unpredictability cuts both ways. The next few weeks will define this golden generation — for better or for worse.
