The Islamic terror attack that killed 49 Americans and wounded 53 others over the weekend was the worst mass shooting in United States history.
The slaughter at “The Pulse” nightclub in Orlando shocked the nation, and to some, the trail leads straight back to Seddique Mir Mateen, the father of the terror gunman Omar Mateen.
Critics say Seddique Mir Mateen is a known and outspoken Taliban sympathizer, raising fresh questions about how he and his family ended up in the United States.
According to CBS News, Seddique Mir Mateen “has well-known anti-American views and is an ideological supporter of the Afghan Taliban. A new message posted by the father on Facebook early Monday morning also makes it clear he could have passed anti-homosexual views onto his son.”
In the video, the elder Mateen said, “God will punish those involved in homosexuality,” but condemned his son’s attack by saying it is “not an issue that humans should deal with.”
The Associated Press reported that Seddique Mir Mateen is a life insurance salesman who started a group in 2010 called Durand Jirga, Inc., according to Qasim Tarin, a businessman from California who was a Durand Jirga board member. The name refers to the Durand line, the long disputed border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Tarin said Seddique Mir Mateen had a television show on which they discussed issues facing Afghanistan.
Some of Seddique Mir Mateen’s shows were taped and later posted on YouTube. During one episode, a sign in the background read: “Long live the U.S.A! Long live Afghanistan … Afghans are the best friends to the U.S.A.”
But a former Afghan official said the “Durand Jirga Show” appears on Payam-e-Afghan, a California-based channel that supports ethnic solidarity with the Afghan Taliban, which are mostly Pashtun. Viewers from Pashtun communities in the United States regularly call in to the channel to espouse support for Pashtun domination of Afghanistan over the nation’s minorities, including Hazaras, Tajiks and Uzbeks, the official told The Associated Press.
The “Durand Jirga Show” expresses support for the Taliban, has an anti-Pakistan slant, complains about foreigners in Afghanistan and criticizes U.S. actions there, the official said.
According to a translation reported by The Washington Post, “Our brothers in Waziristan, our warrior brothers in [the] Taliban movement and national Afghan Taliban are rising up,” the senior Mateen said in one program. “Inshallah the Durand Line issue will be solved soon.”
“Just hours before the Orlando shooting, Seddique Mateen posted a video on a Facebook page called Provisional Government of Afghanistan — Seddique Mateen. In it, he seems to be pretending to be Afghanistan’s president, and orders the arrest of an array of Afghan political figures,” according to The Washington Post. “‘I order national army, national police and intelligence department to immediately imprison Karzai, Ashraf Ghani, Zalmay Khalilzad, Atmar, and Sayyaf. They are against our countrymen, and against our homeland,’ he says, while dressed in army fatigues.”
He also announced on that show that he would run in the next Afghan presidential election, an official told The Associated Press, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because he did not want to be linked to coverage of the shooting.
CBS News’ Ahmad Mukhtar said that it Seddique Mateen could be delusional. “He thinks he runs a government in exile and will soon take the power in Kabul in a revolution,” Mukhtar noted in a CBS report.
This is noteworthy, as gunman Omar Mateen was also said to have been suffering from mental illness. According to Fox News, a former colleague of the terrorist, Dan Gilroy, described the gunman as “unhinged and unstable” person that regularly used homophobic, misogynistic and racist slurs. The Washington Post also reported that his ex-wife said the younger Mateen “was not a stable person,” and that he had a history of violence.
The younger Mateen was interviewed by the FBI twice for his sympathies towards Islamic extremists and his potential link to terrorism, but was never arrested. There is no word on whether the FBI had interviewed the father in the past.

I have no idea how the families of the killed now feel. Losing a son or daughter at age is really a blow to family members. Yesterday, people called to find if my son was at the party. No, he was not there. I have no idea these high powered multi-rounds gun lovers are after. You do not need such guns in town or cities. If you live in the bushes that is where you may need several rounds gun. In my little town, three people were killed by their own gun. A friend who knew where their guns were, sneaked behind them and came out and shot them with their own guns. I don’t own a gun; and don’t need a gun now. If I move in the country with many animals around I will need a gun. Not now.

Guns are needed for personal self defense against animals and criminals, but, as history has shown us, the most important use for guns, especially high powered guns, is to protect us from government and genocide. More people have died by their own governments than any other way – this is a fact of history. You should be happy that others will take on the cause should it become necessary just like we are happy we can eat chicken without having to kill it and prepare it ourselves – someone else will do that for us. You don’t criticize the chicken killers as bad people doing mean things to animals. Ever since I returned from Europe in 1946 I have questioned how any human being could prevail in msking machine guns legal. I had two functioning Schmeizer (sp?) “burp guns”, took them to the ATF people who were housed in the Camden (NJ) PO. They spot welded the barrel to the receiver and returned one to me. I ultimately sold it for $15 when I was improperly recalled and sent to Korea along with several thousand INACTIVE reservists. At the time the powers that be concluded that ACTIVE reservists and STANDBY reservists would best be left alone because they were afraid they might REALLY be needed in the event we had a shooting war with the Chinese. Oh, what happened to the second machine pistol? The ATF guys stole it! Back on point.

You could count on one hand the number from the Germans – the rest were “accidental self-inflicted gun-shot wounds or KIAs”. And after a year operating north of the 38th parallel, the same kind of experience with handguns.
