Former Vice President Kamala Harris has a plan for election day to guarantee a Democratic Party landslide… she just has to get rid of the U.S. Constitution first.
Harris wants 16-year-olds to vote, and said COVID-19 interrupted education – overwhelmingly Democrat-led – was the reason. Her proposal, of course, is in contrast to 2014 remarks when she called 18- to 24-year-olds “stupid” and said they “make really bad decisions.”
Lowering the voting age to 16 would require a constitutional amendment. The 26th Amendment lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 in 1971.
“I think we should reduce voting age to 16,” Harris said. “I’ll tell you why. So, Gen Z, they’re age about 13 through 27, they’ve only known the climate crisis.”
Harris said young people missed substantial education during the COVID-19 panic, and because they now face uncertain job prospects should be allowed to vote… because they’re anxious about the weather.
“They’ve coined the term climate anxiety to describe fear of not only being able to buy a home, but that fear will be wiped out by extreme weather, and fear of having children,” Harris said.
“If they’re voting right now at 16 and up, they’re going to be talking about the importance of climate. They’re going to be talking about the importance of figuring out how A.I. is going to affect the future of the workforce. They’re going to be focused on what are we really doing about affordable housing,” Harris said.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis blasted back at Harris’s proposal. He responded on social media with a simple “No” followed by criticism of her reasoning.
“Also, suffering from ‘climate anxiety’ is not exactly an argument for lowering the voting age,” DeSantis pointed out.
Harris made different comments about young adults in 2014 while serving as California Attorney General. She announced a “Back on Track” program to reduce recidivism among young criminals. The program worked with people aged 18 to 30 facing first-time, low-level drug sale charges.
“And it’s a specific phase of life, remember, age is more than a chronological fact. What else do we know about this population, 18-24?” Harris said in 2014. “They are stupid. That is why we put them in dormitories and they have a resident assistant. They make really bad decisions!”
Young voters favored Harris 52% to 46% in the 2024 presidential election.
Kamala Harris says that because of the “climate crisis” and “climate anxiety” among young people, the United States should lower the voting age to 16.
