Two men were arrested by federal agents after allegedly setting a bomb under a Fox News van in Salt Lake City that failed to detonate. The attempted terror attack over the weekend caused a massive neighborhood evacuation and investigation.
Adeeb Nasir, 58, and Adil Justice Ahmed Nasir, 31, face multiple federal charges, including Threat of Terrorism, Possessing Weapons of Mass Destruction, and Possessing Explosive Devices after their alleged Friday terror attack. The two are reportedly Pakistani migrants who had legally become citizens of the United States.
The device was discovered underneath the vehicle parked next to the news building and was determined to be real by bomb squad experts. Officials said the explosive had been lit but “failed to function.”
“The Salt Lake City Police Bomb Squad and the Unified Fire Authority Arson/Bomb Squad located the device under a FOX 13 News vehicle that was parked next to an occupied building,” according to officials.
Because of the bomb’s placement targeting a media outlet, authorities said it constituted a significant threat to public safety, prompting the FBI’s Salt Lake City Field Office to assume jurisdiction over the investigation.
Within two days, federal investigators traced the bombing attempt back to a home near 2700 South and 8500 West in Magna, Utah, where both suspects were living.
FBI agents served a federal search warrant on the property Saturday, working alongside Salt Lake City Police and Unified Fire bomb squads to ensure the residence was safe to enter.
During the search, both suspects told investigators that “two hoax weapons of mass destruction” discovered in their home were “real,” according to arrest documents.
The search uncovered a cache of illegal items that authorities said posed a “significant risk of mass casualties.” Officers found firearms, bomb-making equipment, illegal narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and electronic devices related to the terror bombing attempt. The property also reportedly contained multiple anti-Trump signs.
Both men were prohibited from possessing firearms due to existing protective orders.
“Law enforcement officials observed additional contraband and evidence of crimes outside the scope of the original warrant, to include firearms and firearm related items, explosives and explosive-related components, illegal narcotics and associated paraphernalia, as well as electronic devices reasonably believed to contain evidence,” the arrest report stated.
The attempted terror attack represents the latest in a series of threats against media outlets across the country. The relationship between the two men remains unclear, though they were living in the same residence at the time of their arrest.
“FOX 13 News is working closely with law-enforcement and our risk management team, with the safety of our employees as our top priority,” said FOX 13 Station Manager Leona Wood.
The bombing attempt occurred ess than an hour from Utah Valley University, where conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Wednesday during a campus speaking event.
