President Donald Trump ended former Vice President Kamala Harris’s Secret Service protection late last week.
Now reports say Harris has already been handed an elite security task force courtesy of one of her Democratic allies.
According to Los Angeles affiliate FOX 11, Harris’ new security detail is made up of Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers, who have been reassigned to guard the former vice president.
As many as 14 of LAPD’s elite Metro Division officers have been “pulled from working cases” and “crime suppression efforts” to provide security for Harris, FOX 11 reported on Wednesday.

FOX11 recorded an unmarked LAPD SUV with at least two plain clothes officers sitting in the driveway outside Harris’ home in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, where she has been living with her husband, Doug Emhoff, since leaving Washington, DC.
Harris was also offered protection from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in response to Trump revoking her detail, the Los Angeles Times reported last week.
Use of CHP officers for dignitary protection would have to be signed off on by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, the outlet said.
A Newsom spokesperson declined to confirm the security arrangement but said: “The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”
Harris’ new detail was also addressed by fellow Democrat LA Mayor Karen Bass who told FOX 11 in a statement:
“This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearances and more. This puts the former vice president in danger and I look forward to working with the governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles,” said Bass.
Upon the news of Trump ending Harris’ Secret Service protection, the media went crazy, spinning it as retribution or retaliation against Harris.
However, Trump was restoring the standard for former vice presidents after the Biden administration secretly extended Harris’ coverage beyond normal policy.
Former vice presidents typically receive federal government protection for only six months after leaving office, while former presidents receive lifetime protection.
Harris’s six-month period expired in July, but the Biden administration quietly extended her protection to 18 months without public disclosure or explanation.
The secret extension would have kept Harris’s taxpayer-funded security in place until July 2026, with taxpayers covering her upcoming book tour for her memoir “107 Days” scheduled for release next month.
Then-President Joe Biden quietly signed a directive extending protection for Harris beyond the traditional six months right before leaving office. The extension was not made public until news of Trump’s decision broke.
Trump’s action returns Secret Service protection for former vice presidents to the standard policy that has applied to all previous vice presidents.
The extension of Harris’s protection was done without congressional authorization or changes to existing law governing post-office benefits for former officials.
The LAPD and Harris’ office did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.
