The Biden family has officially announced that former first daughter Ashley Biden is getting divorced from husband Dr Howard Krein.
The 44-year-old Ashley Biden officially filed the signed divorce papers in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Monday, The New York Post reported.
“New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” the former first daughter posted on social media to the song “Freedom Time,” by pop star Lauryn Hill. She also posted a video of herself walking and putting up a ‘thumbs up’ to the song “Freedom” by Beyonce.
Krein works as a successful otolaryngologist and plastic surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Ashley has a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and has worked for criminal justice reform in the state.
The couple were introduced by Ashley’s late half-brother, Beau Biden, in 2010. The couple married in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, at the same church where Ashley was baptized.
Their luxury wedding reception took place at the Biden family’s lakeside estate in Wilmington, an event Ashley recalled when introducing her father at the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
“At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception,” Ashley said. “He was riding around in his John Deere 4-wheeler, fixing the place settings, arranging the plants, and by the way, he was very emotional.”
The couple lived in a $1.3 million mansion in Philadelphia’s Society Hill neighborhood. Ashley Biden and Krein were last seen together publicly during then-President Biden’s July 2024 address to the nation from the Oval Office, when he announced that Democratic leadership had pushed him out of his re-election bid.
Divorce complaints are not public records in Philadelphia, so details about the reasons for the split remain private.
Ashley Biden is the only biological daughter of former First Lady Jill Biden, who married Joe Biden after the car accident death of his first wife and mother of his two sons, Beau and Hunter. Throughout her father’s political career, Ashley has publicly appeared at significant family and political events.
The divorce filing comes as the Biden family transitions for the first time out of the public spotlight following President Biden’s departure from office in January. Ashley’s marriage to Krein had been one of the more longest relationships in all the Biden family’s public profile.
