Former President Barack Obama was sent a message at 3:00 a.m. Monday morning by President Donald Trump on Truth Social about the nuclear weapons facilities he paid for in Iran.
Trump blasted Democratic Sen. Chris Coons and Obama over suggestions that his administration might pursue another Iran deal similar to Obama’s failed 2015 nuclear agreement, when Obama shipped $400 billion in taxpayer cash to the radical Islamic regime.
“Tell phony Democrat Senator Chris Coons that I am not offering Iran ANYTHING, unlike Obama, who paid them $Billions under the stupid ‘road to a Nuclear Weapon JCPOA (which would now be expired!), nor am I even talking to them since we totally OBLITERATED their Nuclear Facilities,” Trump wrote in the overnight post.
The message came in response to comments Coons made during a Fox News interview with anchor Shannon Bream, where the Delaware Democrat claimed without evidence that Trump was considering a deal with Iran.
“I’ll just note that President Trump, by press accounts, is now moving towards negotiation and offering Iran a deal that looks somewhat similar to the Iran deal that was offered by Obama, tens of billions of dollars of incentives and reduced sanctions in exchange for abandoning their nuclear program,” Coons said during his Sunday appearance.
Coons was referring to recent press reports suggesting the Trump administration was weighing a $30 billion deal with Iran that would allow for the development of civilian nuclear facilities. The reports claimed the deal would provide “tens of billions of dollars of incentives and reduced sanctions in exchange for abandoning their nuclear program.”
Trump had already denied these reports on Friday in another Truth Social post, calling them fake news.
“Who in the Fake News Media is the SleazeBag saying that ‘President Trump wants to give Iran $30 Billion to build non-military Nuclear facilities.’ Never heard of this ridiculous idea,” Trump wrote late Friday. “It’s just another HOAX put out by the Fake News in order to demean. These people are SICK!!!”
Trump ordered B-2 stealth bombers to strike three Iranian nuclear facilities on June 21st with 30,000 lbs. bunker buster bombs, which the White House said completely destroyed Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Trump has described the precision bombing mission as devastatingly effective.
“It was obliterated like nobody’s ever seen before. And that meant the end to their nuclear ambitions, at least for a period of time,” Trump told Fox News on Sunday. “The bomb went through it, like it was butter, like it was absolute butter.”
Democratic lawmakers have seized on leaked “low confidence” preliminary intelligence reports to challenge the White House’s claims. Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut claimed, “We set this program back for months … that is not obliteration.”
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton of Arkansas blasted “Trump Derangement Syndrome” for negative mainstream media coverage of the precision strikes and accused Democrats of “rooting for the survival” of Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump has threatened to take action against news outlets that are reporting on illegal leaks. He has specifically mentioned CNN and the New York Times after they ignored official, higher-confidence intelligence reports from U.S. and international sources.
The strikes were followed by a ceasefire deal Trump brokered with Israel early last week. During the NATO summit last week, Trump indicated the U.S. would meet with Iran regarding a permanent agreement on the nuclear weapons program, though he downplayed the need for a formal deal.
Obama’s Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed in 2015, allowed Iran to build up its nuclear program in exchange for relief from sanctions. Critics charged that the deal provided Iran significant relief while not delaying its ability to develop nuclear weapons.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei delivered a televised address to the nation on June 26, claiming victory for Iran despite what he acknowledged was the destruction of their nuclear program and the loss of nearly 1,000 people and dozens of military leaders.
Trump said rebuilding their destroyed nuclear program is “the last thing” Iranians would want to do right now as they rebound from the U.S. attacks.
