Elon Musk’s time working with the Trump administration may not actually be over — yet.

Musk announced this week that his time working in the Trump administration as a “Special Government Employee” is drawing to a close — even thanking President Donald Trump for the opportunity.

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote in a post on X.

“The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

But was the move premature? According to President Donald Trump, he still has big plans for Musk with an announcement of his next role happening today.

President Trump announced yesterday that he will be holding a White House press conference this afternoon, teasing something new with Musk.

What that will entail? We will find out today.

However, the reports of Trump positioning a new working relationship with Musk come as reports have surfaced over the past week that Musk was on the outs with Trump.

In particular, A New York Times headline from an article dated Wednesday but updated Thursday read, “A Disillusioned Musk, Distanced From Trump, Says He’s Exiting Washington.”

However, based on Trump’s tease, it doesn’t appear that there is any bad blood.

CNBC reported that as part of Musk’s role as a “special government employee,” he is only allowed to work for the administration for “130 days in a calendar year” which would be part of the equation of why Musk would be leaving his role with DOGE.

In the meantime, news of what’s next with Trump, Musk, and the government will come today.

Stay tuned.
