Police say they’ve taken a lunatic into custody after he admitted to spraying a contaminant that officials believe contained mouse poison on unpackaged food at several Michigan grocery stores.
An investigation indicated the man sprayed a mixture of hand sanitizer, water and mouse poison on produce and open food bars at a minimum of three Ann Arbor stores within the last couple of weeks, the FBI announced Tuesday.
He also visited other stores in Ann Arbor and several other Michigan cities, the state said. By Wednesday afternoon, food inspectors said they had visited all 15 stores and found no evidence of further problems.
Officials warn, however, that he may have hit other stores they’re not aware of. Out of “an abundance of caution,” they have encouraged customers to throw away food from salad bars, olive bars and ready-to-eat hot and cold food areas bought at the affected stores between mid-March and the end of April.
The FBI has not yet released the man’s identity.
He was taken into custody Tuesday following tips from the public after the FBI released images of him taken from surveillance footage. No charges have been filed and the man’s motive isn’t known, FBI spokeswoman Jill Washburn said in an email Wednesday.
State officials say an investigation revealed the chemicals found in some formulations may include a neurotoxin called Bromethalin, but they don’t anticipate serious health effects for those who may have eaten contaminated food.
“Although most of these types of foods may have already been eaten or disposed of, some may still be in refrigerators or freezers,” said Jamie Clover Adams, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The man is believed to have used the spray at Whole Foods, Meijer and Plum Market locations in Ann Arbor, said the FBI, which is working with Ann Arbor police on the case.
The state released a list of over a dozen other stores that the man may have targeted, including others in Ann Arbor and stores in Flint, Midland, Birch Run and Saline.

Absolutely, that is the way it should be for any criminal act. Eye for an eye. It would keep the prison rate down.
No it wouldn’t. Half the people in prisons are doing time for possession (not manufacturing or distribution), usually of only recreational, personal amounts.
After prohibition the criminals needed something illegal to make big money, so drugs were outlawed. So now you have cartels running Mexico and gangs making big money on drugs. There is only one solution – decriminalize drugs and have the gov give out free drugs in every city. The only catch is that all drug addicts have to watch movies, etc about getting clean. The primary purpose is to stop the crime. It would kill the cartels and no one would have any reason to push drugs on others. With the reduction of 90% of the crime the savings in jails, police, judges, attorneys, etc. would be way more than it would cost to give out the free drugs and think of all the new jobs that would be created and clean drug addicts could fill many of them. So #1 – stop the profit for criminals and #2 help the addicts get clean while you stop them from robbing houses and mugging people and prostituting for the next fix. After all, drug addicts will get their next fix and being illegal does not stop them.

Take a look at the heroin problem in America after the Taliban got thrown out of Afghanistan(where they had SEVERELY crippled the opium production) and agents of the USG took over. Opium production is as high as it’s ever been, maybe higher, and the drug problem in the US grew exponentially. Think there’s no connection? If it IS a mental defect, why so vindicative? An asylum keeps him off the street as well as a prison. Better, in some ways, because there’s a limit to how long you can jail someone for a given offense, but a crazy guy can be kept in a looney bin for life if they don’t declare him “cured.”

This guy can’t be trusted again. I’m not willing to gamble that he might not do something like this (or worse) again. Simply do away with him. Whether he falls into some convoluted ‘make the parasitic lawyers richer than they already are’ definition of ‘crazy’ or not. I’m not saying torture him mercilessly. Simply execute him in some relatively painless manner. And everyone like him. We don’t have such a shortage of people that we need every single last one of them. If I did something like what he did, I’d fully expect to be executed, and I’d welcome it for ‘putting me out of my misery’.
