Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ousted from party

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., once hailed as the rising star of progressive politics, finds herself at the center of a growing ideological rift within the far-left wing of the Democratic Party.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) recently pulled their endorsement of Ocasio-Cortez and ousted her from their party, citing her stance on Israel and her acknowledgment that antisemitism has become prevalent among pro-Palestinian movements.

The DSA’s national leadership withdrew their support just a week after initially endorsing AOC, highlighting the increasing antisemitism within the far-left. This move has sent shockwaves through progressive circles and exposed deepening fissures in the Democratic Party’s left flank.

The organization listed several reasons for their decision, including AOC’s vote affirming Israel’s right to exist and her support for strengthening Israel’s Iron Dome defense system, which protects civilian centers from Islamic terror rocket attacks.

The final straw appears to be AOC’s participation in a June 10 roundtable on antisemitism with the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.

During this event, the DSA claimed AOC “conflated anti-Zionism with antisemitism and condemned boycotting Zionist institutions.”

AOC, known for her progressive stances on various issues, has generally aligned with left-wing positions on Israel.

She has referred to Israel’s actions to destroy Hamas in Gaza as “genocide” — it’s not, the Israeli Defense Force uses extreme caution to minimize civilian casualties and Hamas’ use of human shields has been well recorded. AOC also opposed giving supplies to Israel to help them defend themselves.

However, her willingness to even acknowledge growing antisemitism and recognize Israel’s right to exist has put her at odds with her extreme base.

The alarming trend towards extremism within left-wing circles has been on full display since anti-Israel protests broke out following the Oct. 7 Islamic terror attack against Jewish civilians.

As the 2024 elections approach, this incident may have broader implications for the Democratic Party.

The situation also highlights the of Democratic Party leaders to address the Israeli-Hamas war and the rampant antisemitism that has grown throughout the party.
