After President Joe Biden’s stumbling performance in the recent presidential debate, the dam holding back Democrats from openly calling for his ouster has broken.
A number of Democratic elected officials, on and off Capitol Hill, have now officially called for Joe Biden to announce he will no longer seek a second term as president of the United States, freeing the Democratic Party to select a more viable candidate before the November election.
“President Biden’s first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw,” said the first Democratic congressman to break ranks publicly with the president, Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas. “I respectfully call on him to do so.”
Others have suddenly followed suit.
Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., said Biden needs to “shoulder the responsibility for keeping” the government in the Democrats’ hands, “and part of that responsibility is to get out of this race.”
“I do not believe that the president can effectively campaign and win against Donald Trump,” said Rep. Angela Craig, D-Minn. “That’s why I respectfully call on President Biden to step aside as the Democratic nominee.”
Some Democrats tried to warm up the president by saying deciding not to run would be the greatest act to secure his “legacy” as president. “The only thing that you can do now to cement that for all time and prevent utter catastrophe is to step down and let someone else do this,” Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., told Biden.
Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., compared Biden to the father of our country, saying it’s “time for him to follow in one of our Founding Father George Washington’s footsteps and step aside to let new leaders rise up and run against Trump.”
Another 25 Democrats are biding their time before sabotaging their nominee, according to leaks from inside sources.
On the other side of Capitol Hill, Senator Mark Warner, D-Va., planned to call a meeting of fellow senators who would apply pressure from the chamber where Biden spent more than three decades.
The nation’s Democratic governors have even begun weighing in. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey issued a statement softly prodding Biden to get out of the race.
“The best way forward right now is a decision for the president to make. Over the coming days, I urge him to listen to the American people and carefully evaluate whether he remains our best hope to defeat Donald Trump,” she said.

Massachusetts Republicans weren’t buying her sudden change of heart.
“She must have had known about his cognitive decline for a while now. Why hasn’t she spoken up?” asked MassGOP spokesman Logan Trupiano.
But evidently Healey’s statement convinced Democratic State Rep. Mike Connolly of Massachusetts, who said, “It’s sad to see a person in decline — but it’s time for President Biden to end his campaign for re-election and for top Democrats to stop gaslighting the American people.”
Connolly is no Republican posing as a Democrat: He describes himself as a “proud progressive and democratic socialist.”
It’s sad to see a person in decline — but it’s time for President Biden to end his campaign for re-election and for top Democrats to stop gaslighting the American people. Trump is now closer than ever to retaking the White House, and we need to do everything we can to stop him.

The Dump Biden effort proves the “wheels are coming off the bus” of the 2024 presidential campaign, said former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.
But if that’s true, Biden is doing all he can to seal the lug nuts—and quiet the wingnuts—of his party.
Sen. Mark Warner seeks to assemble group of Democratic senators to ask Biden to exit race. Wheels are coming off the bus – @JoeBiden has no idea what’s going on. Even his own party doesn’t think he can win. Fact check TRUE. https://t.co/C1RGsbX8JF

Joe Biden has brushed off every attempt to get him to reconsider the possibility that he shouldn’t be the nominee—or that he could lose the race.
“Maura Healey didn’t say anything when I was in the room, OK?” said Biden after Healey’s remarks. Referring to a meeting two days earlier with Healey and other Democratic governors, Biden said, “You guys saw the governors, every one of them in that room—all those governors said stay in the race.”

When George Stephanopoulos brought up Mark Warner’s attempts to gin up Senate opposition in an interview that aired Friday, Biden replied, “Mark’s a good man. He also tried to get the nomination, too.”
Mark Warner has never run for the Democratic presidential nomination. He reportedly thought about running for president—what senator hasn’t?—but that was in 2008, when Biden hardly made a showing himself.
In the end, Warner’s meeting went the way of his aborted presidential hopes: He called off the Monday meeting, which was supposed to be held in secret, after national media broke the story.

He’s not the only senator to be scuttled: Former Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, now an independent, planned to speak out about Biden’s dismal debate performance on that weekend’s Sunday morning TV shows…until convinced to clam up via a phone call from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
The dam has broken…but Biden doesn’t give a damn.
Biden jumped on a conference call last Wednesday, before the long holiday weekend, to tell his party to give it a rest.
“No one’s pushing me out. I’m not leaving,” he said bluntly. “I’m in this race to the end and we’re going to win.”
Biden increased the humiliation by having Vice President Kamala Harris join him. “We will follow our president’s lead. We will fight, and we will win,” she told her party.
On Monday, Biden released a two-page public letter telling Democrats he’ll never give up his quest for a two-term presidency.
“The question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it’s time for it to end,” Biden wrote.
There isn’t enough time to replace a presidential nominee, Biden argued.
“We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election,” he said. “Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us.”
Biden followed up the letter by screaming at the hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe.
“I’m getting so frustrated by the elites—no, I’m not talking about you guys, but the elites in the party,” Biden said, inadvertently insulting his hosts.
“If any of these guys that don’t think I should run—run against me! Announce for president! Challenge me at the convention!”
Look, I’m not a political consultant, but I’m thinking that Biden screaming on Morning Joe isn’t going to soothe any souls about his condition.
How easily he’s angered is a symptom of his condition. pic.twitter.com/Sky56wtv6p

That struck some conservatives as outrageously hypocritical.
“When RFK and Dean Phillips ran against Biden in the primaries he made the party move the entire primary schedule around and even cancelled some contests. Now that it’s all over he’s calling for a challenge?” asked Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo. “This would be hilarious if he didn’t have the nuclear codes!”
Biden was yelling his “brains” out on Morning Joe daring “elites” to challenge him for the nomination.

But Biden does have the nuclear codes…and, like the Democratic nomination, he has no intention of turning them loose.
