The leaders of the G7, which includes the wealthiest countries in the world, met for a summit in southern Italy. On the second day, they talked about important topics like artificial intelligence, the economy, and immigration.
But there was one subject that President Joe Biden really, really didn’t want to address.
The host country Italy is very interested in immigration since many migrants travel through Italy to get to other parts of Europe. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wants to invest more money in Africa to give people opportunities there so fewer will feel the need to migrate to Europe.
The G7 plans to work together to fight against criminal gangs that smuggle migrants. They want to support the countries where migrants come from, improve border security, and create safer ways for people to migrate legally.
Over 22,000 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea so far in 2024. Last year, over 157,000 arrived and nearly 2,000 died making the dangerous trip across the Mediterranean Sea. The U.S. is also dealing with many migrants at its southern border.
Some African leaders were invited to the summit to discuss these migration issues. The G7 leaders also showed strong support for Ukraine in its war with Russia. However, not all the leaders agreed on everything, like whether abortion rights should be mentioned in their final statement.
However, they didn’t want to talk about the ongoing Israel-Hamas War… or, at least, Biden didn’t
He was asked a question about his administration’s role in trying to broker a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas… and he changed the subject back to the Russia-Ukraine War.
Take a look —
Biden was NOT happy when a reported asked him about a potential deal with Hamas during his joint presser with Zelensky:
“I wish you guys would play by the rules a little bit. I’m here to talk about a critical situation in Ukraine. You’re asking me about another subject.” pic.twitter.com/jhxgQyBPM5
