Kamala Harris refuses debate offer from Fox News

Former President Donald Trump announced Friday that his campaign accepted Fox News Channel’s invitation to host the vice presidential debates.

However, the campaign has hit a snag.

Vice President Kamala Harris has already committed to debating on a rival network.

The vice president’s team has told CBS that she’d debate in studio on July 23 or August 13.

In a statement, Fox News said it had offered to host a vice presidential debate on either of these dates. The cable network also said it remained open to hosting a debate on a day after both parties’ conventions.

Fox News proposed holding the debate Virginia State University, the location proposed by the Commission on Presidential Debates.

President Joe Biden’s campaign said it would reject the Fox News offer. The Biden campaign has reportedly made a list of demands about the acceptable parameters for a debate… the campaign won’t include Fox News.

Plus, Biden and Trump have already bucked the Commission on Presidential Debates, the organizer of every debate since 1988. They’ve both agreed to two unaffiliated debates: one by CNN on June 27 and another by ABC on Sept. 10.

Virginia’s two senators, Democrats Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, urged the candidates to still hold a debate at the school.

The state’s Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin slammed Biden — but not Trump, whom he has endorsed — for refusing to participate in the debate commission’s presidential face-off, saying it was a “huge snub” to the school and citizens of Virginia.

In a post on social media, Trump hoped for Harris to debate his running mate at Virginia State. Trump has also accepted NBC’s invitation to a third debate, and he’s pressed Biden to attend.

“On behalf of the future Vice President of the United States, who I have not yet chosen, we hereby accept the Fox Vice Presidential Debate, hopefully at Virginia State University, the first Historically Black College or University to host a Debate – Date to be determined. I urge Vice President Kamala Harris to agree to this,” Trump said. “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

In a statement, Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon accused Trump of having “a long history of playing games with debates: complaining about the rules, breaking those rules, pulling out at the last minute, or not showing up at all.”

Trump has yet to announce his running mate. At this point, he might wait until the Republican National Convention in July.

By that time, the vice presidential candidates may never have even debated.
