Top Dem congressman is sued for $180,000 in unpaid rent

Democrat Rep. Dan Goldman represents a congressional district encompassing Wall Street. He’s heir to the Levi Strauss & Co. fortune, and according to one review of disclosure forms, he boasts a net worth between $64 million and $253 million.

Now, Goldman is on the hook for $180,000 in unpaid rent, according to a court document shared with Business Insider Wednesday.

Landlord Jared Gilbert is reportedly suing both the congressman and his wife Corinne, and the landlord is demanding the rent from Aug. 1 to Nov. 30.

Plus, the landlord is demanding $45,000 for each of the remaining eight months on the lease. That’s a sum of $360,000 on top of the $180,000.

According to StreetEasy’s estimate, the luxury condo is now estimated to cost $82,500 per month between fees, taxes, insurance, and mortgage payments.

The condo lies in New York’s ritzy Tribeca neighborhood. It offers 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, concierge services, and a terrace with a view of downtown Manhattan. It’s currently on sale for $14 million.

Goldman himself has remained silent on the matter, but his office has denied the accusations of evading rent.

“These allegations are baseless,” Goldman spokesperson Simone Kanter told Insider. “The Congressman has always paid his rent on time and in full.”

Goldman, once a federal prosecutor, served as legal counsel during one of Donald Trump’s impeachment trials. He won his first election to Congress in 2022.

After joining Congress, Goldman attracted attention for his early endorsement of the effort to expel George Santos, another New Yorker known for his unpaid rent.

Santos was ultimately expelled after a House Ethics Committee report alleging campaign finance law violations.
