Conservative leader Tucker Carlson’s 2024 Republican presidential candidate forum at the Family Leadership Summit in Des Moines, Iowa was brutal on the GOP leaders that attended.
The so-called “Tucker stress test” hurt some of the Republican leaders — and may have completely ended former Vice President Mike Pence’s campaign.
Carlson interviewed Pence, as well as former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
Former President Donald Trump declined Carlson’s interview request. His campaign cited an unnamed scheduling conflict.
Skipping the event was probably wise for Trump.
The evangelical crowd booed and jeered some candidates, including Pence — who would normally expect to get a warm reception from the conservative audience.
“Tucker Carlson is good at what he does. I think some of Pence’s responses — for a vice president to get boos, audible boos, from the audience? That’s a big deal,” Mike Demastus, pastor of the Fort Des Moines Church of Christ, told Politico. “I even heard one pastor friend of mine say, ‘His campaign’s over.’”
Glenn Beck asked Carlson if he’d meant to “light” the Republican candidates “on fire.”
