Tucker Carlson replacement, starting next week, announced

Cable news star Tucker Carlson’s sudden departure from Fox News Channel’s coveted 8:00 p.m. Eastern primetime slot has caused an unexpected backlash towards the conservative news channel.

Ratings have plummeted from an average of 3 million nightly for Carlson’s show, “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” to approximately 1.6 million on average for the generic replacement “Fox News Tonight.”

Executives at Fox News are eager to replace Carlson and reclaim their number-one spot atop the television ratings. The channel will debut a third interim replacement to try out for the position next week.

Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, who served under former President Donald Trump from April 2020 until he left office in January 2021, will take the reigns at the primetime time slot starting Monday.

It’s an audition of sorts for McEnany. Bill O’Reilly’s departure in 2017 resulted in numerous interim hosts, which included eventual permanent replacement Tucker Carlson.

Lawrence Jones, the host of the weekend show Cross Country, was the interim host this week. Previously it was Brian Kilmeade from Fox & Friends.

McEnany has co-hosted Fox’s midday opinion program Outnumbered since leaving the Trump White House. Her show often scores higher ratings than competitors Good Morning America and Today, with Hoda & Jenna.
