On Monday, Fox News host Jesse Watters was discussing the struggles in President Joe Biden economy with his frequent collaborator Geraldo Rivera — and he didn’t like the push back from Rivera, who was optimistic that Biden was making the right moves.
On his show The Five, Watters argued that the economy seems to be improving only superficially. He attributed the GDP figures to the American Rescue Plan Act, which roughly coincided with the Great Reopening.
Watters described overactive consumers as high on “fiscal methamphetamines.”
“So everybody stayed home, and so as we came back up, Joe dropped $2 trillion in like — I don’t know — the same month as the economy reopened the pier,” Watters said presumably referring to the American Rescue Plan, which granted $1.25 billion for music halls, $3 billion for aircraft manufacturers, and a whopping $28.6 billion for restaurants.
“That is like fiscal methamphetamines,” Waters continued.
“We go just right to the moon and then… inflation! The economists are like, ‘Oh, my god, I didn’t see this coming.’ It’s like the only profession they get paid to not see things coming. Always unexpected when you’re an economist!”
Rivera countered that he was optimistic about the economy under Biden. He pointed out job growth and business expansion. However, he voiced his worries about the omicron variant.
He lashed out at Watters, and claimed he “sounded like drunk history.”
Rivera also accused the media of negativity bias. “We don’t do stories about processes working,” he said.
The newscasters discussed the economy throughout the broadcast.
One host, Greg Gutfield, blamed the supply chain backlogs for the Democrats’ abysmal polling, and he accused Biden of dragging his feet on the issue.
After that, Gutfield defended Watters.
“You are more entertaining than drunk history,” he said.
