University of Missouri professor Melissa Click, 45, was charged with assault Monday for her alleged shoving and calling for “some muscle” to help remove videographer, Mark Schierbecker, from a Black Lives Matter (BLM) protest on the Columbia campus this fall.
But despite public outrage, Click continues to hold a job at the university — and she won’t be fired anytime soon.
The confrontation happened when protestors forced Schierbecker and other journalists away from a public area to create a so-called “Safe Space” for black students. Video of Click’s alleged assault on Schierbecker went viral, and he complained to university police.
An interim chancellor on Monday rebuffed demands for Click’s ouster, even in the wake of the criminal charges.
When asked about the prospect of Click being fired before her tenure process is completed later this year, Hank Foley, who oversees the four-school system’s campus in Columbia replied: “No. Not going to happen.”
Schierbecker said he found Foley’s comments disheartening.
“I’m all for due process, but it just seems like a broken system if an untenured professor can’t be fired for basic open-and-shut cases like this,” the senior from suburban St. Louis, who is majoring in German and history, said in a recent interview. “I’m just a little disappointed the city was faster to move on this than the university.”
A member of the university system’s governing curators renewed his call for Click’s firing Monday. David Steelman said the school placed a letter admonishment in Click’s employment file over the matter, but that doesn’t satisfy him.
“I’m willing to listen to the possibility of other job actions involving her as long as they’re serious,” Steelman, a Rolla attorney, said. “The whole situation surrounding this has been stonewalling and an attempt to run out the clock by the university” in hopes it fades from the limelight.
“Respecting students’ rights, free speech and safety has to be the No. 1 priority of any great university,” he said.

I remember up in Boston as to how so many of the folks labeling urban working class ethnic folks as “intolerant” mostly lived in segregated suburbs. Those suburbs have residents only parks, beaches, schools etc. They make the old south look good. Places where Missy Click types live see high rents and force out poor or lower middle class people. Look at South Boston, Arlington or Brighton in the Greater Boston area. The working class priced out of their long time sections. Fortunately Miss Click types have few if any kids.

This is frightening in the fact that our colleges are now promoting this kind of agenda – silencing those who disagree with them (which most times are the right!) – this woman is insane – and so is the college to continue to keep such a radical, out of control person in their class rooms! Schierbecker still holds the cards in his favor. He can always file a discrimination lawsuit against this little gnomette and the University demanding lots of dollars. The University is very likely to fold in his favor.

This woman should be fired. It is beyond reason to keep a communications professor on staff that advocates depriving a journalist of their free speech rights. If Mizzou doesn’t fire her, the program’s accrediting agency, ACEJMC, should pull the program’s accreditation. The school’s loss of their accreditation might give administrators enough backbone to send this woman to the unemployment line. Based on the video Click has some real anger management issues and a profound lack of understanding of free speech and the role of the media. The conduct in question happened on school grounds. There should be a professional price to pay for such unprofessional conduct.
The university needs to send a message that Click’s actions will not be tolerated. ACEJMC needs to send a message that this type of action will not be tolerated by faculty in programs they accredit. The Missouri legislature needs to send the message that taxpayer funds will not go to bankroll the deranged actions of state university employees.
If I had been president of the university I would have told you to get your tents off the grass or face expulsion. And as for the football team refusing to play ,we would have ended the season. This is not a race thing, it’s a respect thing . no respect for themselves, no respect for others, no respect for the university and no respect for the law.
