Jury selection in former President Donald Trump’s upcoming criminal trial is going to be an exhaustive process.
Potential jurors will be faced with a massive 42 question list aimed at assessing biases surrounding the 45th president and the high-profile case.
If convicted, Trump faces potential jail time. A felony criminal trial being held in the middle of the critical 2024 presidential election for a major candidate is unprecedented in American history.
According to a list of questions released by Judge Juan Merchan, the 77-year-old former president’s jury pool will be asked about a wide range of topics – from their media habits and impressions of Trump’s Truth Social platform, to their opinions on political movements like the Proud Boys and Antifa, to any personal connections they may have attending Trump’s rallies.
The lengthy 42-point questionnaire underscores the difficult task of finding a jury acceptable to both the prosecution and Trump’s defense team in such an unprecedented and politically charged case. Any perception of an unfair jury could provide grounds for a mistrial down the road.
Among the key questions, potential jurors will be asked about their primary news sources, specifically whether they closely follow conservative-leaning outlets like Fox News or liberal-skewing platforms like MSNBC. Questions about their awareness and viewpoints on extremist factions like QAnon are also asked.
The questionnaire will ask jurors if they or any close associates have been involved in Trump’s iconic “MAGA” rallies or use his Truth Social media platform.
With jury selection set to begin on April 15th ahead of opening statements, the case marks Trump’s first criminal trial arising from the Manhattan district attorney’s probe into his alleged role in funneling hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the lead-up to the 2016 election.
Trump has sought to delay the trial and push for a venue change outside of Manhattan over concerns of being unable to secure a fair, impartial jury given the heavily Democratic skew of the area. Those efforts have been rejected by the Court.
Here are the 42 questions prospective jurors will need to answer regarding Trump’s trial —
