In the race for House speaker, the GOP’s potential nominees have been asking for the support of former President Donald Trump.
However, Trump had a message for the senior-most contender: House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn.
Trump, a presidential candidate, traveled to New Hampshire on Monday to file for their primary election.
According to Mediaite, one reporter asked, “Would you endorse Tom Emmer for speaker?… He hasn’t historically been your biggest fan, but he is the most likely candidate right now.”
Trump declined to endorse anyone in the House’s messy, divisive race for a new leader. He once endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan, only to watch the Ohio Republican lose three rounds of voting on the House floor.
“He’s my biggest fan now because he called me yesterday and told me I’m your biggest fan,” Trump said.
But that same day, Trump later shared a video criticizing Emmer’s old views on election reform.
“In this video, the Uniparty’s pick for Speaker of the House Tom Emmer admits he wants to get rid of the Electoral College,” far-Right firebrand Laura Loomer posted on Truth Social.
Trump reposted the video.
Some moderate Republicans — and some Democrats — would like to simply give more power to Acting Speaker Patrick McHenry, R-N.C. One bipartisan proposal would allow McHenry to reconvene the House, resume the routine business of governing, and delay the speakership race until January at the latest.
However, McHenry has bristled at this proposal.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has also declined to endorse anyone at this stage.
“Look, I’m not an expert on the House. I have my hands full here in the Senate,” McConnell said Sunday on CBS. “We’re gonna do our job and hope the House can get functional here sometime soon.”
Trump said in New Hampshire, “They all called asking for support… There’s only one person who can do it all the way: Jesus Christ.”
