President Joe Biden is always sloganeering about “science.”
But when he met with U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson this week, and he apparently disregarded the scientific community’s advice.

Biden and Johnson each wore masks while sitting far apart and talking.
Then, they each took off their masks for a photo op, and Biden entered Johnson’s six-foot radius to pat him on the back.
Previously, Biden promised to wear a mask indoors, he said in a statement about the CDC’s mask guidance.
“I hope all Americans who live in the areas covered by the CDC guidance will follow it,” he said.
“I certainly will when I travel to these areas.”
The Fox News host Steve Hilton caught the hypocrisy and tweeted some photos from Biden’s meeting with Johnson, where he accused Biden of failing to take his own advice.

In the comments, some Twitter users expressed confusion about when to wear a mask.
One user tweeted, “I want to know etiquette for restaurants. I wear a mask on entry, all the way to ordering food- but then when eating obviously have to remove it; what do I do when the waitress comes back to ask if my meal is as expected? Shoo her away before she reaches 2m, re-mask?”

In January, Biden tweeted, “Science will always be at the forefront of my administration.”
“Our Administration will lead with science and scientists — with a CDC and NIH that are free from political influence, a Surgeon General who is independent and speaks directly to the people, and an FDA whose decisions are based on science and science alone,” he tweeted later that month.
However, it’s not possible to completely free the health agencies from political influence. The question of when to wear a mask is not only scientific, but also administrative.
Americans have scientific questions about how masks can block droplets most effectively, and we also have administrative questions about about where enforcing a mask mandate can be practical.
Since August, San Francisco Mayor London Breed has been requiring masks for public, indoor gatherings. However, she argued this week that doesn’t count when she’s in photos.

At least, that was her rationalization for breaking her own mask mandate.
Oddly enough, Biden seems to have corroborated Breed’s point: Mask advice needs to be practical, as well as scientifically sound.
Science is necessary but insufficient. Yet, the Democrats will keep sloganeering.
