Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis is used to appearing in public, both as a former newscaster and as the wife of Gov. Ron DeSantis.
However, in private, she’s been battling breast cancer.
Gov. DeSantis announced the first lady’s diagnosis in October. On Friday, he made a more cheerful announcement. First Lady DeSantis has finished her final chemotherapy treatment.
“Yesterday, we completed the final chemotherapy treatment that she has to do,” Gov. DeSantis said at a press conference, to applause.
“It’s not the most fun thing to see someone to go through, but at the end of the day, she’s fought really hard. We think she’s responded very well. She’s still got more stuff to do, but that’s a big milestone because it’s nasty stuff when they’re doing that,” the governor continued.
“She got through that. She ran that gauntlet. She’s doing well, and we look forward to continue to have good news over the ensuing weeks and months.”
The first lady confirmed the news over Twitter on Friday.
“Thank you for being by my side from the beginning, but especially yesterday,” she added. “I’m grateful, very humbled and blessed.”

When Gov. DeSantis first announced the cancer diagnosis in October, prominent figures in both parties were expressing their well wishes for the first lady.
Casey DeSantis was addressed in a public statements from by former U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former chair of the Democratic National Committee Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried and U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist each issued a statement about the first lady, and they were both running for governor against DeSantis.
This time, public figures are largely remaining silent on the first lady’s health.
Of the top three Democrats in the governor’s race, Florida Sen. Annette Taddeo remains the only one to have issued a statement.
Plus, some Twitter users have rushed to exploit the first lady’s condition for their own agenda.
