California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is viewed by many as the frontrunner for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, suffered a huge blow to his hopes of becoming the next president thanks to an unlikely source.
One of Hollywood’s top actresses.
In a shocking video, Hollywood A-list actress Halle Berry tore into Newsom while delivering a speech about how women are viewed in Hollywood and across America.
Berry took the stage at the Dealbook Summit yesterday and spoke about how women are “devalued,” particularly after they reach a certain age. The “Catwoman” star drew gasps from the audience while making her comments and referencing Newsom, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“At this stage in my life, I have zero f***s left to give,” Berry told the crowd.
“Back in my great state of California, my very own governor, Gavin Newsom, has vetoed our menopause bill, not one, but two years in a row,” she added.
“But that’s OK, because he’s not going to be governor forever, and the way he has overlooked women, half the population, by devaluing us, he probably should not be our next president either. Just saying.”
Ouch! Take a look.
The bill, AB 432, introduced by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, had a goal of improving and expanding menopause care, mandating that a healthcare service plan or health insurer provide recommendations for menopause-related treatments.
The bill would have also required healthcare providers to get training on menopause care, according to a press release from Bauer-Kahn.
Newsom vetoed the bill a second time in October, according to Fox News.
Izzy Gardon, a spokesperson for Newsom, told The New York Post that Newsom vetoed the menopause care bill because it would have raised health care costs.
“The governor has deep admiration for Ms. Berry’s advocacy and looks forward to working with her and other stakeholders on this critical issue,” Gardon said. “He shares her goal of expanding access to menopause care that too many women struggle to get.
“He vetoed the bill because, as written, it would have unintentionally raised health care costs for millions of working women already stretched thin — something he’s determined to avoid.”
“We’re confident that by working together this year, we can expand access to essential menopause treatment while protecting women from higher bills,” Gardon said.
Berry’s stunning, public rebuke of Newsom comes at a critical time for the leading Democrat, who told CBS News in October he is giving serious thought to running for president in 2028.
Polls regularly show Newsom as one of the top contenders in a Democratic presidential primary, along with former Vice President Kamala Harris and ex-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Democratic leaders rely big on big-dollar donations from Hollywood A-listers and their rich donor friends.
Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign raised tens of millions from Hollywood industry-linked donors, including a single George Clooney-led fundraiser netting $28 million.
Harris’ campaign also spent at least $20 million on celebrity appearances during her failed presidential run, federal election records revealed.
Berrry’s break could dry up that well for Newsom… and end his campaign before it even begins.
