In case you’ve lost track of time, America’s 250th anniversary is around the corner, with the country’s birthday taking place on July 4, 2026.

A handful of generations of Americans were not even alive during the last major celebration of the United States back in 1976 during the country’s bicentennial.

But President Donald Trump is already preparing the nation for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration for America’s 250th that will go down in the history books.

This past week, Trump signed an executive order establishing a “White House Task Force on Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday.”

The order read:

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of American Independence on July 4, 2026, it is hereby ordered:

Section 1. Purpose. It is the policy of the United States, and a purpose of this order, to provide a grand celebration worthy of the momentous occasion of the 250th anniversary of American Independence on July 4, 2026. It is also the purpose of this order to take other actions to honor the history of our great Nation.

The Smithsonian celebrated the 200th Fourth of July with a twelve-week Bicentennial Festival of American Folklife, a visit from Queen Elizabeth II, and the opening of the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall on July 1, 1976.

Well before being elected for a second term, Trump was preparing to celebrate the country’s milestone anniversary.

In 2023, before an Iowa State Fair townhall, Trump announced his “Salute to America 250” proposal: a “One-Year Celebration of 250 Years of American Independence” that would be held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Shortly after he became the Republican nominee, he renewed that proposal.

Fast forward to today, and Trump wants to continue his promise by making the celebration coincide with his promise to usher in “America’s Golden Age” as he coined when elected.

Plans have already started, with Trump hiring Monica Elizabeth Crowley, Ph.D. to serve as Ambassador, Assistant Secretary of State, and Chief of Protocol of the United States of America.

Trump has tapped her be the Administration Representative for major U.S. hosted events, including America’s 250th Birthday in 2026, the FIFA World Cup in 2026, and the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.

Washington, D.C. museums have already began planning for the celebrations.

“We will, by far, have the best celebration of the 250th in America,” said Elliott Ferguson, who leads Destination D.C. “And we’re excited about that.”

Naturally, the July Fourth celebration will include a fireworks show as big as D.C. has ever seen. But events and exhibitions will be prominent up and down the National Mall in the weeks and months before and afterward.

The National Archives will be adding the Emancipation Proclamation and the 19th Amendment to what are known as the “Charters of Freedom,” where documents such as the Declaration of Independence are already on display.

“Both of these documents are milestone documents that mark the beginning of the fulfillment of the principles contained in the Declaration of Independence,” said Colleen Shogan, the archivist of the United States.

“With our existing charters that are already here, they help to tell a more complete history of the United States of America.”

According to reports, the National Archives will also be hosting other events and exhibitions throughout the year on top of that, with programing aimed at people of all ages throughout 2026.

The last time there was this big of a celebration, The Smithsonian celebrated the 200th anniversay of the United States with a twelve-week Bicentennial Festival of American Folklife, a visit from Queen Elizabeth II, and the opening of the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall on July 1, 1976.

If you were around during the planning, perhaps you remember then-President Gerald Ford ushering in the event.

Stay tuned for more details on America’s 250th celebration.
