According to early reports, controversial Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California was very intoxicated at a dinner out in Washington, D.C. — and ended up humiliated after he was confronted by a conservative activist leaving the restaurant.
The conservative activist, Nick Sortor, claimed Swalwell “invaded” his table while “inebriated at dinner” on Monday, and promised to release video of the incident on Tuesday.
“I know you have me blocked, but I wanted to thank you for the ‘lovely’ chat we just had at dinner! You’ll see a video recap tomorrow here on X! Regards, The man whose table you invaded while you were inebriated at dinner,” Sotor wrote on the social media platform.

Later, Sortor shared his video of Swalwell. He claimed the California Democratic leader was drunk and had been “compromised by a group of lobbyists he’d just met” and sharing “intimate details about his job and asking for help cheating on his wife.”

In his earlier social media post, Sortor had joked about Swalwell’s former girlfriend in the early 2000s that turned out to be a Chinese Communist Party spy.

Between 2011 and 2015, Swalwell was reportedly involved with Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative who developed extensive political connections throughout California’s Bay Area.
Fang, who first met Swalwell when he was a Dublin City councilmember, participated in fundraising activities for his 2014 re-election campaign and helped place at least one intern in his congressional office, according to Axios’ investigation. Rumors say Swalwell and Fang were involved in a sexual relationship at the time, and that he’d fallen for a “honeytrap.”
In 2015, FBI officials briefed Swalwell about their counterintelligence concerns regarding Fang; only then did Swalwell cut ties with her and cooperate with investigators.
The House Ethics Committee, after a two-year investigation, concluded in 2023 that no action would be taken against Swalwell regarding his relationship with Fang.
Following the revelations, Swalwell was removed from the House Intelligence Committee in 2023 by Speaker Kevin McCarthy despite his previous reappointments under Republican Speakers John Boehner and Paul Ryan. Fang left the United States suddenly in mid-2015 amid the FBI investigation and has not returned to the country.
