A Democratic Senate campaign worker has been removed from election duties after surveillance footage showed him tampering with a ballot box in Glacier County, Montana, raising security concerns from local election officials.

Laszlo Gendler, employed by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), was captured on video approaching and appearing to pull on a ballot box twice.
The incident, captured on security footage Sunday, prompted an immediate response from County Election Administrator Crystal Cole.
“The MT Dem Party did not notify the Elections office… they would be sending someone to the Ballot Box to check how secure it was, so on camera it looks like he was tamering with the box,” Cole wrote in an email to the Montana Secretary of State’s office, which has since referred the matter to the Glacier County Sheriff.
The DSCC acknowledged the worker was sent to look at the box, but after the security footage said that Gendler’s actions weren’t part of his instructions.
“Poll observers are instructed not to touch ballot boxes,” DSCC spokesperson David Bergstein said.
“This individual was attempting to ensure a new ballot box was secured to the wall, neither the ballot box nor ballots were affected. Their actions were not in accordance with our procedures and out of an abundance of caution they will no longer be doing this work moving forward.”
When contacted by election officials, Gendler claimed he had been ordered by the campaign “to see how secure the box was..
The incident comes at the end of a tight U.S. Senate race between incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican challenger Tim Sheehy.
The ballot box in question is located in Montana’s First Congressional District, where Republican Rep. Ryan Zinke faces Democratic challenger Monica Tranel.
