On Friday morning, a United Airlines plane carrying 160 passengers and six crew members had to be evacuated after it rolled off the runway and became stuck in the grass at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
The Boeing 737 Max 8, operating as Flight 2477 from Memphis, Tennessee, had landed at the Houston airport around 8 a.m.
As it was making its way toward the terminal gate, the plane unexpectedly left the pavement and ended up tilted to one side with one of its wings very close to the ground. Video footage captured after the landing showed the precarious position of the aircraft.
In response to the situation, stairs were brought to the plane, and the crew assisted all passengers in safely disembarking. United Airlines stated that they are working to remove luggage from the aircraft and reunite customers with their belongings as quickly as possible. The airline also said that they will cooperate with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and Boeing to investigate the cause of the incident.
The Houston Airport System confirmed that flights in and out of Bush Intercontinental Airport continued without interruption following the incident. They released a statement saying that the Boeing 737 Max 8 had veered off the runway after landing and that all passengers had been safely bused to the terminal.
This incident comes just a day after another United Airlines jetliner lost a tire while taking off from San Francisco. That plane was able to land safely in Los Angeles without any reported injuries.
As investigations into the Houston incident continue, United Airlines is focusing on assisting affected passengers with their onward connections and other needs. The airline has not yet provided any information on what may have caused the plane to leave the runway.
