In the run-up to the indictment, the Fulton County Sheriff’s office promised to take a mugshot of former President Donald Trump.
Now, with Trump formally indicted, the sheriff has announced the venue — an infamous Atlanta jail known for infestations and violence.
“It is expected that all 19 defendants named in the indictment will be booked at the Rice Street Jail,” Fulton County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Natalie Ammons said in a statement obtained by NBC News. “Based on guidance received from the District Attorney’s office and presiding judge.”

The Rice Street jail, officially called the Fulton County Jail, attracted national attention last year after the death of inmate Lashawn Thompson.
The jail has become so infamous that it often appears by name in popular music from Atlanta — and will soon, at least briefly, house the 45th president.
“Thompson was found in a filthy cell on the medical wing of the Rice Street jail, covered in lice and his own waste, his head in a toilet,” Atlanta magazine reported. “Just days before, the same deputy had voiced concerns over Thompson’s living conditions.”
The jail became the subject of a federal investigation just last month.
Amid the investigation, Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke cited an independent autopsy done at the Thompson family’s request. The assistant attorney general said that Thompson had died from severe neglect.
Clarke called the level of violence in Fulton’s jails “deeply concerning.” She counted three suspected homicides at the main jail last year. Relaying a tip from the sheriff, Clarke voiced concerns about inmates “crafting shanks from the crumbling walls.”
“At one point in 2022, the jails averaged more than one stabbing per day,” Clarke said.
Photos released earlier this year by Ben Crump, the Thompson family’s attorney, showed his body covered in insects and a filthy cell strewn with garbage.

These are the DEPLORABLE and inhumane conditions Lashawn Thompson had to endure during his stay in the psychiatric wing of the Fulton County (GA) Jail. After his death, he was found with insect bites all over his body. We cannot look away, we must demand justice! pic.twitter.com/mpO680k5K8

In Georgia, Trump is facing 13 counts, including conspiracy to commit election fraud, soliciting a violation of oath by a public officer, and — most seriously — violating Georgia’s statute against racketeering.
It remains unclear when Trump will surrender to be processed in the jail.
“Keep in mind, defendants can turn themselves in at any time,” the sheriff’s office said Tuesday, according to NBC News.

The sheriff continued, “The jail is open 24/7. Also, due to the unprecedented nature of this case, some circumstances may change with little or no warning.”
