Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., went viral Sunday for calling on federal regulators to punish Fox News host Tucker Carlson. The following day, she watched her wish become true when Fox suddenly fired Carlson.
Still, Ocasio-Cortez was gloating on social media… and former President Donald Trump provided a perfect foil.
Ocasio-Cortez addressed the media drama in a live stream to her 8.6 million followers.
“Tucker Carlson is out at Fox News. Couldn’t have happened to a better guy,” Ocasio-Cortez beamed on Instagram. “The person who is arguably responsible for driving some of the most amounts of death threats, violent threats, not just to my office but to plenty of people across the country!
Ocasio-Cortez continued, “I also kind of feel like I’m like waiting for the cut scene at the end of a Marvel movie, after all the credits have rolled, and then you see the villain’s hand re-emerge out to grip over the end of a building or something, but deplatforming works, and it is important. There you go. Good things can happen.”
What’s more, her office claimed credit.
“Just yesterday, Alexandria called out Carlson,” her office said in a statement to Punchbowl News.
“Alexandria directly challenges Tucker Carlson and all the many voices like him that are sadly still on the air. She deftly exposes their hypocrisy, calls out their racism and misogyny, and advances policy that will create the more just, inclusive world they so desperately oppose.”
In 2019, Carlson attracted the ire of Ocasio-Cortez by pointing out her “rich” and “entitled” upbringing in an op-ed.
Monday’s shakeups were discussed not only by Ocasio-Cortez, but also by another frequent topic of Tucker Carlson Tonight.
Former President Donald Trump discussed the Fox News shakeups during Monday night’s interview with Newsmax’s Greg Kelly.
Trump says that he heard the news at the same time as everyone else, but had the opposite reaction as Ocasio-Cortez.
“Well, I’m shocked, I’m surprised. He’s a very good person, a very good man, very talented, as you know, and he had very high ratings.” Trump said. “We’re just learning about it almost as we speak. You and I just said, ‘Wow, that was something; that’s a big one.’ I dont know if it was voluntary or if somebody fired.”
Carlson often devoted his airtime to defending Trump, but he also put some critical pressure on the former president, both in public and in private.
Still, Trump used the opportunity to praise Carlson.
“I think Tucker’s been terrific. He’s been, especially over the last year or so, he’s been terrific to me,” Trump said. “Maybe he left because he wants to be given his free rein.”
