Early Tuesday afternoon more devastating news came out of Houston, Texas: An officer with the Houston Police Department lost his life in his patrol car on his way to serve our country.
His identity has yet to be released, but it was revealed that he is a veteran officer who has been with the department for over 30 years.
Search and rescue teams are still recovering his body, and the family has yet to be notified.
The Houston Chronicle reported that he was traveling to work when floodwaters overtook his vehicle where I-45 and the Hardy Toll Road meet.
One high-ranking official said, “He was trying different routes, and took a wrong turn.”
Once trapped, he was unable to get out and tragically drowned.
This death marks the 15th counted fatality in Texas since Hurricane Harvey rattled the state.
Thousands have been rescued and are still in need of rescue.
This officer’s fatality is yet another reminded of the selfless dedication our nation’s police forces give to keep us safe.
