On Christmas Eve, Democrat Gov. Jared Polis of Colorado tweeted a video of himself singing the Christmas song “Feliz Navidad.”
Polis was singing a capella (and off-key). Meanwhile, he was smiling and performing a bizarre dance.
Viewers promptly mocked Polis over the video.
“I know certain drugs are legal in Colorado,” one person joked, referring to the state’s permissive regulations on psilocybin and marijuana. “Perhaps this explains this behavior.”
Another person added, “Someone had too much eggnog.”
One conservative was laughing at the governor’s heavily accented pronunciation of the Spanish lyrics. “Conservative here. I’m not bothered by this at all lol. The pronouncation is what gets me,” he said.
A staffer for Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity posted about the video on Hannity’s website, and Polis credited Hannity with boosting the video.
“Wow Sean Hannity is promoting my Christmas video,” Polis tweeted. “Top 40 here I come…”
Polis has acknowledged the virality of his video, and he’s played into it. He added “recording artist” to his Twitter bio, and then he tweeted about it.
“New bio line,” Polis tweeted Tuesday. “My now-Platinum cover of José Feliciano’s 1970 famous hit has gone viral… 2.4 million views and growing… you just can’t quit me!”
Some viewers have mocked the governor’s false sense of self-awareness. “Cringe on that magnitude is never an accident – it can only be engineered into existence,” one person posted.
Another Twitter user put it more succinctly. “We’re not laughing with you Jared we’re laughing at you,” he said.
