Is the 17th Door in California the scariest haunted house in the world? According to their owners, over a quarter of their paying customers beg for “mercy” and ask to be taken out before they can finish the 30-minute, 17 room tour.

All visitors are given a ‘safe word’ when they enter. They’re asked to sign a waiver form. Then, the doors are locked and the actors are given free rein.

The tour takes visitors through the mind of a college student named Paula as she struggles with depression, drug addiction, and suicidal thoughts. Tickets run from $21 to $35 a person leading up to Halloween, and hundreds of horror fans are expected to attend this year.
