Despite his previous feud with President Donald Trump during the Republican presidential primary, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is taking an aggressive stance behind Trump’s nomination for the vacant spot on the Supreme Court.
Following the official nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch on Tuesday, Cruz quickly sent a message for Democrats plotting to sabotage the confirmation: I’m not afraid to use the nuclear option to win this fight.
“The Democrats are not going to succeed in filibustering the Supreme Court nominee. All procedural options are on the table. The bottom line is we will confirm a strong conservative to replace Justice Scalia,” Cruz told Politico on Tuesday.
Political experts agree that the fight over Gorsuch’s confirmation will be bitter and long — and Democrats have indicated they are eager to sabotage the nominee to appeal to their liberal base.
Their rhetoric is inflammatory. “This is a stolen seat being filled by an illegitimate and extreme nominee, and I will do everything in my power to stand up against this assault on the court,” Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley, a Democrat, said.
Senate Republicans have rallied behind Trump’s nomination of Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, bracing for a months-long fight with Democrats over a conservative judge similar in philosophy to the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell immediately praised Gorsuch, a Denver-based judge on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, saying he “has an impressive background and a long record of faithfully applying the law and the Constitution.” One after the other, Senate Republicans echoed the leader, describing Gorsuch as a well-qualified jurist.
If confirmed, the 49-year-old Gorsuch would be the youngest justice on the court and could be shaping decisions for decades.
