Music industry titan Taylor Swift contributed $100,000 to support the family of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, the woman killed Wednesdya by gunfire at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade.
Lopez-Galvan, 43, was the only person killed in Wednesday’s atrocity. However, the event injured more than 20 people, at least half of whom were children.
The singer-songwriter’s representative confirmed two separate $50,000 donations in Swift’s name to a GoFundMe campaign organized for Lopez-Galvan’s grieving husband and two children.
“Sending my deepest sympathies and condolences in the wake of your devastating loss. With love, Taylor Swift,” the songstress wrote in accompanying messages. Tens of thousands of jubilant fans had gathered with Lopez-Galvan’s family at Kansas City’s Union Station to celebrate the Chiefs’ championship when at least two armed individuals opened fire.
Along with Lopez-Galvan, over 20 others sustained injuries in the chaotic scene, half of them minors. Investigations continue into potential juvenile suspects. But for a community united in championship revelry just moments earlier, the traumatic event cast a pall over a joyous occasion.
By Friday, Swift’s high-profile donations had helped the GoFundMe campaign raise over $200,000 to assist Lopez-Galvan’s grieving family.
The singer’s donation exemplifies the entanglement between music, sports, and philanthropy. As Swift has dated Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, she’s developed a special investment in the team’s Super Bowl run.
Lopez-Galvan was a music fan, too. For more than 15 years, she worked as a DJ hosting “Taste of Tejano” on local radio.
Swift was not at the parade due to a scheduled performance in Australia.
In a statement, Lopez-Galvan’s relatives expressed profound heartbreak. “She was wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to so many,” the GoFundMe description says.
