President Donald Trump said he loved Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., taking a trip to inspect conditions for illegal immigrants held at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Now that Schumer knows the truth, Trump says he’s eager to set-up a meeting with the Democratic leader to talk real solutions on border security.
Schumer and his team have remained silent about Trump’s statement, and have yet to respond to the meeting proposal.
“Senator Chuck Schumer has finally gone to the southern border with some Democrat senators. This is a GREAT thing!” Trump tweeted Sunday.
“Nearby, he missed a large group of Illegal Immigrants trying to enter the USA illegally,” the president continued. “They wildly rushed Border Patrol. Some agents were badly injured.”
Trump is referring to an incident at McAllen, Texas over the weekend. Nearly 50 illegal immigrants attempted to rush and overwhelm the port of entry at the Pharr International Bridge. The illegal immigrants attacked and hurt a number of responding border patrol agents, but were ultimately pushed back.
“At about 4 a.m. [Friday], a group of 47 undocumented individuals attempted to illegally enter the United States in three waves via the Pharr International Bridge,” a statement by Customs and Border Patrol said. “Ignoring commands to stop, the group suddenly rushed the temporary barricades, bent metal poles and disabled the concertina wire affixed to the barrier.”
Border patrol agents deployed tear gas and pepper balls to successfully drive back the attackers. The agents assaulted in the attack are expected to be fine.
Schumer said he was appalled by the conditions on the border, which Trump has repeatedly blamed former President Barack Obama for.
“If you listened to the president you’d think they were all criminals,” Schumer said about illegal immigrants. “They’re not. They’re people simply seeking some … honor, decency for their children.”
“Based on the comments made by Senator Schumer, he must have seen how dangerous and bad for our country the border is,” Trump continued. “It is not a ‘manufactured crisis,’ as the Fake News Media and their Democrat partners tried to portray.”
Schumer indicated he wanted to meet with Trump after seeing the border for himself — something Trump said he’d do as soon as possible.
“He said he wants to meet. I will set up a meeting ASAP!” the president said.
