Rumors have swirled surrounding the mental health of Congresspersons like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer for years.
In fact, the well-being of lawmakers has long been questioned by voters on both sides of the aisle — and the Washington, D.C. pharmacy that provides medication to Congress blew the controversy wide open on Wednesday.
According to The New York Post, Pharmacist Mike Kim from Grubb’s Pharmacy, a 150-year-old D.C. drugstore, hinted that some members of Congress suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and may be unable to remember what they’re doing.
“At first it’s cool, and then you realize, I’m filling some drugs that are for some pretty serious health problems as well. And these are the people that are running the country,” Kim told STAT News.
Alzheimer’s is a very serious and tragic disease that negatively affects the sufferers ability to critical think and problem solve. The rumor that some elected lawmakers are suffering from the disease adds weight to the argument that Congress needs term limits.
“The pharmacy, which fills up to 100 prescriptions per day for Congress, delivers the medications to the ‘secretive’ Office of the Attending Physician — lawmakers only have to pay an annual fee of approximately $600 to use the office,” The Daily Wire reported.
“It makes you kind of sit back and say, ‘Wow, they’re making the highest laws of the land and they might not even remember what happened yesterday,’” Kim said.
He later claimed that when he was citing Alzheimer’s treatments he was speaking hypothetically, but that hasn’t stopped critics from calling for term limits to be put on Congress.
