Meet the newest to-be U.S. Senator: Mrs. Trump.
President-elect Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump has emerged as the leading contender to fill Marco Rubio’s Senate seat. The Florida senator is currently poised to become the next Secretary of State.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis reportedly favors the 42-year-old RNC co-chair for the appointment, according to sources close to Trump’s campaign.
“That’s a fact,” one insider told The New York Post, adding that even Tesla CEO and Trump administration adviser Elon Musk is encouraging her to accept the role.
“But she needs to make a decision. That’s hard when Elon and everyone else is encouraging you to do it.”
Senator Katie Britt, R-A.L., first publicly endorsed Trump for the position, citing her understanding of Republican priorities.
“She understands the America First agenda,” Britt said. “For me, I think she would be a tremendous pick, a voice for hard working families and another mom of school aged kids that understands what we’re up against, and that’s to fight to protect the American dream.”
The mother of two would represent a state that overwhelmingly supported her father-in-law’s recent presidential victory, choosing Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris by more than 13 points (56.1% to 43%). She would serve alongside Sen. Rick Scott in a new GOP majority focused on tax cuts and immigration reform.
Trump’s political stock has risen following what Britt called a “historic win,” referring to her successful efforts with conservative activist Scott Presler to mobilize MAGA voters during the presidential campaign.
At her first campaign speech in northern Michigan month ago, Trump told The Post she would “consider” her post-election future only after securing Republican control of both the White House and Senate.
Republican also won the majority in the House of Representatives, a total sweep in the 2024 election.
However, filling Rubio’s shoes would itself present a unique challenge. The outgoing senator won his last election in 2022 by more than 16 points and has spent two decades building strong donor and political networks in Washington.
While DeSantis’ spokesman said the governor hasn’t officially committed to a pick, Trump’s appointment would further cement the family’s influence in Republican politics.
The former television producer, who is married to Trump Organization executive Eric Trump, has maintained silence about the public support, following the traditional pattern of potential appointees.
If selected, she would join a wave of Trump allies ascending to higher positions as the president-elect assembles his second administration.
