James Copenhaver, 74, the final surviving victim of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, has been discharged from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Copenhaver, who sustained “life-altering injuries” during the July 13 attack, still faces a long road to recovery according to his family.
The shooting, which occurred at a Trump campaign rally, left one dead and three injured, including the former president.
Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter and Trump supporter, was killed while shielding his family from gunfire. Trump himself was grazed in the ear by a bullet.
In a statement, Copenhaver’s family expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received.
“The Copenhaver family would like to thank you for your continued thoughts, prayers, and support as Jim and his family recover from this horrible, senseless, and unnecessary act of violence.”
“Jim would like to especially thank the first responders, medics, and hospital staff who have provided him with initial and continuing care,” the statement continued. “Additionally, Jim would like to express his thoughts and prayers for the other victims, their families, and President Trump.”
Moon Township supervisor Al Quaye described Copenhaver as a “super nice guy” and a regular at local board meetings, and expressed disbelief that he was nearly killed by an assassin.
David Dutch, 57, the other injured rallygoer and a Marine veteran, was discharged last Wednesday after an 11-day hospital stay. Dutch had been shot twice, sustaining injuries to his chest and liver.
The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire from a nearby rooftop before being killed by a Secret Service sniper. The FBI confirmed on Friday that a bullet from Crooks’ gun had struck Trump in the ear.
In response to the attack, the House voted unanimously to create a bipartisan task force to investigate the assassination attempt.
Trump has announced plans to return to Butler for a rally honoring Comperatore and the injured rallygoers.
